Abstract

A method for personalizing content for a particular user in a computing system comprising a user interface configured to display content. The method comprises identifying a long term profile having one or more features in a feature set and a long term level of importance associated with each term in the feature set, identifying a short term profile having one or more features in the feature set and a short term level of importance associated with each term in the feature set, identifying input related to the display of the one or more content items on the user interface, and using the input to modify the short term level of importance and the long term level of importance associated with each term in the feature set to form a modified user interest set.

21. A method for generating profiles for a user, the method comprising:

identifying a first set of interests associated with the user based on user activity;

generating, by a processor, a private profile associated with the user based on the identified first set of interests;

receiving an indication associated with a second set of interests from the user; and

generating, by the processor, a public profile associated with the user based on the indication.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

receiving a selection from the user of one or more authentication measures allowing third-party access to the private profile.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein identifying the first set of interests comprises:

monitoring positive user expressions based on at least user searches, web clicks, or selected web pages; and

monitoring negative user expressions based on at least the user'"'"'s lack of interaction with one or more items presented to the user.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein interests associated with the identified first set of interests are weighed based on at least one of (i) whether an interest was determined based on positive or negative user expressions, (ii) the number of user expressions associated with the identified interest;

(iii) the frequency of user expressions associated with the interest;

or (iv) a pre-determined half-life of interests.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein an interest is weighted more heavily if the interest is also associated with the second feature set.

26. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

identifying short-term interests reflecting user activity occurring during at least a current log-in session or one or more log-in sessions occurring during a predetermined previous period of time; and

identifying long-term interests reflecting user activity since generation of the private profile or public profile.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

presenting items to the user during the current log-in session based on at least the identified short-term interests; and

updating the first set of interests based at least on the identified long-term interests.

28. A computer system for generating profiles for a user, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory having instruction that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform the operations of;

identifying a first set of interests associated with the user based on user activity;

generating a private profile associated with the user based on the identified first set of interests;

receiving an indication associated with a second set of interests from the user; and

generating a public profile associated with the user based on the indication.

29. The computer system of claim 28, wherein the operations performed by the processor further comprise:

receiving a selection from the user of one or more authentication measures allowing third-party access to the private profile.

30. The computer system of claim 28, wherein the operations performed by the processor further comprise:

monitoring positive user expressions based on at least user searches, web clicks, or selected web pages; and

monitoring negative user expressions based on at least the user'"'"'s lack of interaction with one or more items presented to the user.

The computer system of claim 30, wherein interests associated with the identified first set of interests are weighed based on at least one of (i) whether an interest was determined based on positive or negative user expressions, (ii) the number of user expressions associated with the identified interest;

(iii) the frequency of user expressions associated with the interest;

or (iv) a pre-determined half-life of interests.

32. The computer system of claim 31, wherein an interest is weighted more heavily if the interest is also associated with the second feature set.

33. The computer system of claim 28, wherein the operations performed by the processor further comprise:

identifying short-term interests reflecting user activity occurring during at least a current log-in session or one or more log-in sessions occurring during a predetermined previous period of time; and

identifying long-term interests reflecting user activity since generation of the private profile or public profile.

34. The computer system of claim 33, wherein the operations performed by the processor further comprises:

presenting items to the user during the current log-in session based on at least short-term interests associated with the private profile; and

updating the first set of interests based at least on long-term interests associated with the private profile.

35. A tangible computer-readable medium storing instructions for generating profiles for a user, the instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform operations, comprising:

identifying a first set of interests associated with the user based on user activity;

generating a private profile associated with the user based on the identified first set of interests;

receiving an indication associated with a second set of interests from the user; and

generating a public profile associated with the user based on the indication.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more processors to perform further operations, comprising:

receiving a selection from the user of one or more authentication measures allowing third-party access to the private profile.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more processors to perform further operations, comprising:

monitoring positive user expressions based on at least user searches, web clicks, or selected web pages; and

monitoring negative user expressions based on at least the user'"'"'s lack of interaction with one or more items presented to the user.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 37, wherein interests associated with the identified first set of interests are weighed based on at least one of (i) whether an interest was determined based on positive or negative user expressions, (ii) the number of user expressions associated with the identified interest;

(iii) the frequency of user expressions associated with the interest;

or (iv) a pre-determined half-life of interests.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein an interest is weighted more heavily if the interest is also associated with the second feature set.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more processors to perform further operations, comprising:

identifying short-term interests reflecting user activity occurring during at least a current log-in session or one or more log-in sessions occurring during a predetermined previous period of time; and

identifying long-term interests reflecting user activity since generation of the private profile or public profile.

41. The computer-readable medium of claim 40, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause one or more processors to perform further operations, comprising:

presenting items to the user during the current log-in session based on at least short-term interests associated with the private profile; and

updating the first set of interests based at least on long-term interests associated with the private profile.
