1. A system, comprising:

  • an internal combustion engine producing an exhaust gas stream;

    an aftertreatment component structured to treat the exhaust gas stream, the aftertreatment component requiring intermittent thermal regeneration events;

    an electric component operatively coupled to an output shaft of the internal combustion engine;

    a controller structured to;

    determine a regeneration state of the aftertreatment component and determine an engine operation parameter;

    provide an engine loading command in response to the engine operation parameter and further in response to the regeneration state indicating an active thermal regeneration event; and

    wherein the electric component is structured to provide oppositional torque to the output shaft in response to the engine loading command.
