Abstract

Sensing a change in motion proximate to an arbitrarily-shaped surface via a single sensing element (e.g., a pressure sensor, an accelerometer) disposed on a flexible substrate having a sufficient mechanical coupling to the arbitrarily-shaped surface. The change in motion may include at least one of an acceleration, an orientation, a vibration shock and a falling process. In one example, the flexible substrate substantially conforms to the arbitrarily-shaped surface so as to facilitate intimate proximity to the arbitrarily-shaped surface. In another example, a coupling mechanism may mechanically couple the sensing element to the arbitrarily-shaped surface. One or more LEDs coupled to the sensing element may provide a visual cue representing impact or trauma to the surface based on different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the impact or trauma.

Claims

1. An apparatus for sensing a change in motion proximate to an arbitrarily-shaped surface, the apparatus comprising:

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to the arbitrarily-shaped surface so as to facilitate intimate proximity of the apparatus to the arbitrarily-shaped surface; and

a single sensing element disposed on the flexible substrate to sense the change in motion proximate to the arbitrarily-shaped surface.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the single sensing element includes a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electronic component.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the change in motion includes at least one of an acceleration, an orientation, a vibration shock and a falling process, and wherein the single sensing element senses the at least one of the acceleration, the orientation, the vibration shock and the falling process.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the single sensing element includes one accelerometer.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the one accelerometer is rated for g-forces of up to approximately 50 g or less.

6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the single sensing element further includes:

a processor communicatively coupled to the accelerometer; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the processor.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a coupling mechanism to mechanically couple the apparatus to the arbitrarily-shaped surface.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the arbitrarily-shaped surface includes a body part of a person;

the flexible substrate is configured to substantially conform to the body part of the person so as to facilitate comfortable intimate proximity of the apparatus to the body part of the person; and

the single sensing element senses the change in motion proximate to the body part of the person.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the body part is the person'"'"'s head.

10. A helmet to be worn on the person'"'"'s head, the helmet comprising:

the apparatus of claim 9.

11. The helmet of claim 10, comprising only one of the apparatus of claim 9.

12. The helmet of claim 10, wherein the helmet includes at least one suspension pad, and wherein:

the apparatus is integrated with the at least one suspension pad of the helmet.

13. The helmet of claim 12, wherein the helmet further includes at least one coupling mechanism to detachably couple the at least one suspension pad to the helmet to facilitate flexible placement of the at least one suspension pad on the helmet.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a processor communicatively coupled to the single sensing element; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the processor.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, further including at least one flexible and/or stretchable interconnect disposed on the flexible substrate to couple the single sensing element to at least the processor.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the at least one flexible and/or stretchable interconnect includes at least one of:

a bent interconnect;

a buckled interconnect;

an encapsulated interconnect; and

a serpentine pattern of conductive metal.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible substrate comprises at least one of a plastic material and an elastomeric material.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the flexible substrate comprises at least one of a PDMS, a polyimide, a photopatternable silicone, an SU8 polymer, a PDS polydustrene, a parylene, a parylene-N, an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, a poly ether ketone, a polyurethane, a polyactic acid, a polyglycolic acid, a polymer composite, a silicon/siloxane, a polytetrafluoroethylene, a polyamic acid, and a polymethyl acrylate.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an encapsulant, wherein the single sensing element is encapsulated by the encapsulant.

20. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a power source to provide power to the apparatus.

The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising switching circuitry, disposed on the flexible substrate and electrically coupled to the power source, to detect a change in an electric field and to couple and/or decouple the power source and the single sensing element based at least in part on the detected change in the electric field.

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one audio source and/or at least one light source coupled to the single sensing element to provide at least one audible cue and/or at least one visual cue representing impact or trauma based at least in part on at least one output signal generated by the single sensing element.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, comprising the at least one light source, wherein the at least one light source includes a plurality of LEDs having different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the impact or trauma.

24. A method, comprising:

A) sensing a change in motion proximate to an arbitrarily-shaped surface via a single sensing element disposed on a flexible substrate having a sufficient mechanical coupling to the arbitrarily-shaped surface.

25. A system, comprising:

an apparatus for sensing a change in motion proximate to an arbitrarily-shaped surface, the apparatus comprising;

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to the arbitrarily-shaped surface so as to facilitate intimate proximity of the apparatus to the arbitrarily-shaped surface;

a sensing element disposed on the flexible substrate to sense the change in motion proximate to the arbitrarily-shaped surface, wherein the change in motion includes at least one of an acceleration, an orientation, a vibration shock and a falling process, the sensing element including;

an accelerometer;

a processor communicatively coupled to the accelerometer; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the processor;

a coupling mechanism to mechanically couple the apparatus to the arbitrarily-shaped surface; and

a plurality of LEDs coupled to the sensing element to provide at least one visual cue representing impact or trauma based at least in part on at least one output signal generated by the accelerometer, wherein the plurality of LEDs have different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the impact or trauma.
