Abstract

Methods and apparatuses are disclosed herein for population tracking, counting and/or movement estimation. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving mobile phone operational data indicative of user equipment location, where the event data includes location area update messages and periodic registration messages; and performing travel estimation based on the mobile phone operation data, including performing interpolation on data associated with one or more individuals in a population to estimate intermediate positions of a trajectory of each of the one or more individuals for a specified time period based on a shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving mobile phone operational data indicative of user equipment location, the event data comprising location area update messages and periodic registration messages; and

performing travel estimation based on the mobile phone operation data, including performing interpolation on data associated with one or more individuals in a population to estimate intermediate positions of a trajectory of each of the one or more individuals for a specified time period based on a shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm.

2. The method defined in claim 1 wherein performing interpolation includes using a velocity estimate for a user terminal to determine which of a plurality of shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithms to apply.

3. The method defined in claim 2 further comprising applying a GIS-based shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm if the velocity estimate is above a first threshold.

4. The method defined in claim 3 further comprising using mesh weights for shortest path estimation.

5. The method defined in claim 4 further comprising refining one or more mesh weights.

6. The method defined in claim 5 wherein the one or more mesh weights are refined based on a time constraint.

7. The method defined in claim 4 wherein one or more mesh weights are based on one or more selected from group consisting of:

a total length of one or both of railroad and road networks within a mesh, mesh type, mesh width, a number of crossings, and connections with other meshes.

8. The method defined in claim 4 wherein one or more mesh weights are user-dependent.

9. The method defined in claim 4 wherein one or more mesh weights are time-dependent.

10. The method defined in claim 3 further comprising mapping a location of a user terminal within a sector to a mesh with a largest pace value, including mapping the user terminal to one of a group consisting of:

closest to a sector center if a periodic registration message occurred; and

midpoint of a previous and current sector'"'"'s edge if a location area update message occurred.

11. The method defined in claim 3 further comprising applying a linear mesh sequence estimation algorithm if the velocity estimate is below a first threshold.

12. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm uses weight and time constraints for a mesh.

13. The method defined in claim 12, wherein the mesh sequence estimation algorithm revises one or more mesh weights based on travel time, if a time constraint is not satisfied.

14. An apparatus comprising:

a memory to store instructions;

a processor coupled to the memory to execute instructions from the memory, wherein in response to executing the instructions, the processor receives mobile phone operational data indicative of user equipment location, where the event data comprises location area update messages and periodic registration messages, and performs travel estimation based on the mobile phone operation data, wherein the processor performs travel estimation by performing interpolation on data associated with one or more individuals in a population to estimate intermediate positions of a trajectory of each of the one or more individuals for a specified time period based on a shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm.

15. The apparatus defined in claim 14 wherein the processor performs interpolation includes using a velocity estimate for a user terminal to determine which of a plurality of shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithms to apply.

16. The apparatus defined in claim 15 wherein the processor performs a GIS-based shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm if the velocity estimate is above a first threshold and a linear mesh sequence estimation algorithm if the velocity estimate is below a first threshold.

17. The apparatus defined in claim 14 further comprising using mesh weights for shortest path estimation.

18. The apparatus defined in claim 17 wherein mesh weights are based on one or more selected from group consisting of:

a total length of one or both of railroad and road networks within a mesh, mesh type, mesh width, a number of crossings, and connections with other meshes.

19. The apparatus defined in claim 17 wherein one or more mesh weights are user-dependent.

20. The apparatus defined in claim 15 wherein one or more mesh weights are time-dependent.

21. The apparatus defined in claim 14 wherein the processor maps a location of a user terminal within a sector to a mesh with a largest pace value, including mapping the user terminal to one of a group consisting of:

closest to a sector center if a periodic registration message occurred; and

midpoint of a previous and current sector'"'"'s edge if a location area update message occurred.

22. A product having one or more computer readable storage media storing executable instructions thereon which when executed cause a system to perform a method for estimating travel behavior in a mobile network, the method comprising:

receiving mobile phone operational data indicative of user equipment location, the event data comprising location area update messages and periodic registration messages; and

performing travel estimation based on the mobile phone operation data, including performing interpolation on data associated with one or more individuals in a population to estimate intermediate positions of a trajectory of each of the one or more individuals for a specified time period based on a shortest path mesh sequence estimation algorithm.
