Abstract

The invention provides a layered composition comprising: a first layer comprising a first material, wherein the first material comprises a gel material; a second layer comprising a second material, wherein the second material is harder is than the first material; and a third layer comprising a third material, wherein the third material has a lower tensile modulus than the second material, wherein the second layer is disposed between the first and third layers. The composition may be used in a wound dressing, in which preferably the first layer is in fluid flow communication with the wound.

Claims

1. A layered composition comprising:

a first layer comprising a first material, wherein the first material comprises a gel material;

a second layer comprising a second material, wherein the second material is harder is than the first material; and

a third layer comprising a third material, wherein the third material has a lower tensile modulus than the second material or wherein the third material is a low friction material, or both, wherein the second layer is disposed between the first and third layers.

3. A layered composition according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the second material is a polyester.

4. A layered composition according to claim 1, wherein the layered composition has a microhardness according to BS ISO 48:

2007 between about 30 and about 90.

5. A layered composition according to claim 4, wherein the layered composition has a microhardness according to BS ISO 48:

2007 between about 50 and about 90.

6. A layered composition according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the gel material comprises a hydrogel or hydrocolloid.

7. A layered composition according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the gel material consists of a hydrogel or hydrocolloid.

8. A layered composition according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the third material has a lower tensile modulus than the second material.

9. A layered composition according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the third material is a low friction material.

10. A layered composition according to claims 1 or 2, for use in the prevention, dressing or treatment of a wound.

11. A layered composition according to claim 10, for use with a wound selected from skin cuts, grazes, abrasions, tears, bums, scalds, ulcers, spots, blisters and chafes, whether dermal, epidermal, or a combination of both, and whether acute or chronic.

12. A layered composition according to claim 10 or 11, wherein the composition is adapted so that the first layer is in fluid flow communication with the wound or skin of a wearer in use.

13. A wound dressing comprising the layered composition according to any one of claims 1 to 12.

Use, in a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 12 or a wound dressing according to claim 13, of a second layer as defined in order to promote wound healing, avoid or mitigate break-up of the gel material of the first layer, enhance penetration resistance of the composition or dressing, facilitate improved dispersion of external forces applied to the composition or dressing, provide a base for mounting the third layer thereto to provide acceptable slip properties of the composition dressing against clothing when worn by a user on the skin, and impart mechanical stability to the gel material of the first layer.

A method of manufacturing a layered composition according to any one of claims 1 to 12, comprising assembling the first, second and third layers to form the layered composition, optionally with adhering the first, second and third layers together, optionally with one or more further layers and/or materials, for example adhesive materials, disposed between the first and second layer and/or the second and third layer.

16. A method of manufacturing a wound dressing according to claim 13, comprising assembling a layered composition configured as a wound dressing, using a method according to claim 15, optionally with additional layers as desired, for example, backing, release or other layers.

A method of preventing, dressing or treating a wound comprising applying a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 12 or a wound dressing according to claim 13 to a wound and/or skin of a wearer, wherein the first layer is disposed closer to the wound and/or skin than the third layer and the first layer is preferably in fluid flow communication with the wound and/or skin.

2. A layered composition comprising:

a first layer comprising a first material, wherein the first material comprises a gel material;

a second layer comprising a sheet of a polymeric second material; and

a third layer comprising a third material, which is a low friction material, wherein the second layer is disposed between the first and third layers;

and wherein the layered composition has a microhardness according to BS ISO 48;

2007 between about 30 and about 90, preferably between about 50 and about 90.
