Abstract

A method for providing a consumer with the ability to access and collect personal health records associated with the consumer in a secure and private manner is provided. The method includes assigning a toll-free phone number individually associated with and dedicated to the consumer for private fax and voice communications from a health care provider, associating access information with the consumer for the consumer to use to access a secure web site, receiving a private fax communication comprising a personal health record associated with the consumer for which the consumer has requested and given permission to the health care provider to send to the toll-free number, converting the private fax communications into an image file format, storing the health record encoded in the image file format, and providing the consumer with secure access to the web site using the access information and providing on the web site an interface to the health records of the consumer for the consumer to access the health record.

Claims

1. A method for providing a user with functionality for accessing and collecting health records associated with the user, the method comprising:

associating access information with the user to access a user account on a web site using a web-enabled device;

providing the user with an authorization form to give to one or more health care providers requesting that health records associated with the user be sent to a fax number;

receiving at a server, a health record previously sent to the fax number, the health record encoded in an image file format;

determining at the server, the user account associated with health record and associating the health record with the user account;

making available the health record to the user through the user account on the web site; and

alerting the user of the health record being available on the web site.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the health record is from the set consisting of a patient chart, a birth certificate, a vaccination record, a medical history, a lab report, a test result, a prescription, an x-ray result or image, a scan, and an EKG result or image.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

providing on the web site functionality to the user for associating a health care provider with the health record.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the alerting the user of the health record being available on the web site comprises displaying a message center with alerts, the alerts providing for alerting the user of the health record being available on the web site.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises maintaining a calendar associated with the user account and providing on the web site functionality for the user to calendar appointments with the one or more health care providers.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising sending a reminder regarding the calendar appointments to the user.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising assigning the fax number to the user account.

8. A method for providing a user with functionality for accessing and collecting health records associated with the user, the method comprising:

associating access information with the user to access a user account on a web site using a web-enabled device;

providing the user with an authorization form to give to one or more health care providers for requesting that health records associated with the user be sent to a fax number;

receiving at a server, health record previously sent to the fax number, the health record encoded in an image file format;

determining at the server, the user account associated with the health record and associating the health record with the user account;

making available the health record to the user through the user account on the web site; and

providing on the web site a user interface configured to provide for management of health records by maintaining a list of health care providers and providing functionality to associate the health record with one of the health care providers.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the user interface is further configured to provide for calendaring doctor appointments and calendaring prescription refills.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising sending a reminder regarding a doctor appointment or prescription refill to the user.

11. A system for communicating health records of a user, comprising:

a consent document providing instructions for and giving permission to a health care provider to fax health records of the user to a phone number associated with the user;

a fax server for receiving faxes of the health records directed to the phone number and directing the health records to a user account associated with the user;

a web server in operative communication with the fax server and adapted to provide a secure web-based interface to the health records, the secure web-based interface configured to provide for management of health records by maintaining a list of health care providers, providing functionality to allow the user to associate the health record with one of the health care providers, and provide for organizing and annotating the health records.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the consent document is a sticker.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the phone number is a toll free number.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein the phone number is a dedicated phone number and wherein the web server further provides for assigning the dedicated phone number to the user account upon registration of the user on a web site.

15. The system of claim 11 further comprising an access card comprising access information associated with the user to be used to access the secure web-based interface to the health records of the user, the access card conveying the access information to another in event of a medical emergency associated with the user and wherein the access card further comprises emergency medical alerts associated with the user.

16. The system of claim 11 wherein the health records include health records from a set consisting of a patient chart, a birth certificate, a vaccination record, a medical history, a lab report, a test result, a prescription, an x-ray result or image, a scan, and an EKG result or image.

17. The system of claim 11 wherein the health records include prescriptions for drugs and the system further comprising an analysis component adapted for accessing the health records and a drug interaction database and performing a drug interaction analysis for the drugs.

18. A method for assisting with collection and management of health records, the method comprising:

providing a kit to a customer, the kit comprising;

(a) an access card comprising access information associated with the customer to be used to access a web site providing access to health records of the customer, and (b) at least one document comprising a request to a health care provider to electronically send the health records to a destination and granting permission by the customer to the health care provider to send the health records to the destination;

receiving at a server, a health record previously sent to the destination;

determining at the server, a user account associated with health record and associating the health record with the user account;

making available the health record to the customer through the user account on a web site.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the destination is a toll-free number for receiving a fax communication.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the at least one document is a sticker adapted for attachment to the health records.
