Abstract

An apparatus includes a housing, a medicament container, an actuator, and a biasing member. The actuator is configured to move the medicament container within the housing when the actuator is moved from a first configuration to a second configuration. The actuator includes a gas container and a puncturer. When the actuator is in the first configuration, a portion of the puncturer is disposed apart from the gas container. When the actuator is in the second configuration, the portion of the puncturer is disposed within the gas container. The gas container has a longitudinal axis offset from a longitudinal axis of the medicament container. The biasing member is configured to bias the actuator toward the second configuration.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a housing;

a medicament injector movably disposed within the housing, the medicament injector including a medicament container and a needle;

a system actuator disposed within the housing, the system actuator configured to move the medicament injector within the housing in a distal direction when the system actuator is moved from a first configuration to a second configuration, the system actuator including;

a gas container configured to contain a pressurized gas;

a puncturer having a portion disposed apart from the gas container when the system actuator is in the first configuration, the portion being disposed within the gas container when the system actuator is in the second configuration; and

a biasing member configured to urge the system actuator towards the second configuration when the biasing member is released;

a base coupled to a distal end portion of the housing, the base configured to release the biasing member when the base is moved relative to the housing; and

a retraction spring configured to produce a force to move the medicament injector in a proximal direction such that the portion of the needle is disposed within the distal end portion of the housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a safety lock movably coupled to the distal end portion of the housing, the safety lock configured to limit movement of the base relative to the housing when the safety lock is in a first position, the base configured to move relative to the housing when the safety lock is in a second position.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a longitudinal axis of the retraction spring is offset from a longitudinal axis of the medicament container.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the base includes a substantially planar surface configured to engage a body, the surface defining an opening through which a portion of the needle is disposed in response to the system actuator being moved from the first configuration to the second configuration.

5. A method, comprising:

actuating a release member;

discharging a gas from a gas container in response to the actuating the release member, the gas container contained within a housing, the gas container having a longitudinal axis;

moving a medicament container within the housing in response to a force produced by the gas, the medicament container having a longitudinal axis offset from the longitudinal axis of the gas container; and

transferring a medicament from the medicament container through a needle coupled to the medicament container in response to the force.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the discharging includes moving the gas container within the housing such that a portion of the gas container is in contact with a puncturer.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein:

the discharging includes moving the gas container within the housing in a first direction; and

the moving includes moving the medicament container within the housing in a second direction opposite the first direction.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the moving includes moving the medicament container such that a needle coupled to the medicament container is disposed outside of the housing.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the transferring includes moving a plunger within the medicament container in response to the force.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein:

the moving the medicament container is performed at a first time; and

the transferring is performed at a second time after the first time.
