Abstract

A system and method for enabling a user to display and interact with a social networking structure on a video device connected to a network enabled host device is provided. A user interface (UI) 700 is also provided for displaying content (e.g. messages or tweets) that is output in an overlay for display on a display while program video is playing. The method provides for accessing a social networking site in response to a user input, the user input initiated while outputting a program for display, generating at least one keyword for searching the social networking site based on at least one characteristic associated with the program, retrieving content from the social networking site based the at least one keyword and outputting the retrieved content in an overlay for display simultaneous with the program.

Claims

1. A method for searching for content on a social networking site, comprising:

accessing the social networking site in response to a user input, the user input initiated while causing a program to be shown on a display device;

generating at least one keyword for searching the social networking site based on at least one characteristic associated with the program;

retrieving content from the social networking site based the at least one keyword; and

outputting the retrieved content in an overlay for display on the display device simultaneous with the program.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the keyword is derived from a description of the program provided in an electronic program guide.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is a actor performing in the program.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is an organization related to the program.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is a commercial product advertised during the program.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating at least one second keyword based on a program channel being recorded.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating at least one second keyword based on at least one program channel in the user'"'"'s favorite list.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating at least one second keyword based on at least one word in the retrieved content.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the generated at least one keyword in the overlay in addition to the retrieved content.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

selecting the generated at least one keyword to generate at least one second keyword, the at least one second keyword is associated to similar content as for the generated at least one keyword; and

outputting the at least one second keyword for display on the display device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one second keyword is an embedded link to additional content.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

retrieving additional content from a predetermined identity selected by the user; and

outputting the additional content in the overlay for display on the display device with the content retrieved based on the at least one keyword.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising prioritizing the content retrieved based on the at least one keyword and the additional content.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the prioritizing is based on a user setting.

15. A system for searching for content on a social networking site, comprising:

a receiver that accesses the social networking site in response to a user input, the user input initiated while causing a program to be displayed on a display device;

a controller, coupled to the input signal receiver, that generates at least one keyword for searching the social networking site based on at least one

characteristic associated with the program and retrieves content from the social networking site based the at least one keyword; and

a display interface, coupled to the controller, that outputs the retrieved content in an overlay for display on the display device simultaneous with the program.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the keyword is derived from a description of the program provided in an electronic program guide.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the at least one characteristic is a actor performing in the program.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the at least one characteristic is an organization related to the program.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the at least one characteristic is a commercial product advertised during the program.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller generates at least one second keyword based on a program channel being record.

21. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller generates at least one second keyword based on at least one program channel in the user'"'"'s favorite list.

22. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller generates at least one second keyword based on at least one word in the retrieved content.

23. The system of claim 15, wherein the display interface displays the generated at least one keyword in the overlay in addition to the retrieved content.

24. The system of claim 23, further comprising a user interface coupled to the controller, that facilitates selecting the generated at least one keyword, the controller further generating at least one second keyword based on the selection from the user interface, wherein the at least one second keyword is associated to similar content as for the generated at least one keyword, and wherein the display interface outputs the at least one second keyword.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the at least one second keyword is an embedded link to additional content.

26. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller retrieves additional content from a predetermined identity selected by the user and the display interface displays the additional content in the overlay with the content retrieved based on the at least one keyword.

27. The system of claim 27, wherein the controller prioritizes the content retrieved based on the at least one keyword and the additional content.

28. The system of claim 28, wherein the controller prioritizes based on a user setting.

29. A user interface for displaying content from a social networking site, comprising:

means for accessing the social networking site in response to a user input, the user input initiated while causing a program to be shown on a display device;

means for generating at least one keyword for searching the social networking site based on at least one characteristic associated with the program;

means for retrieving content from the social networking site based the at least one keyword; and

means for outputting the retrieved content in an overlay for display on the display device simultaneous with the program.
