an identity storage element (142), located remotely from the local storage elements (112, 122, 132), storing a global patient identifier corresponding to each of a plurality of patients and one or more of the local patient identifiers corresponding to each of the plurality of patients; and
a location storage element (144), located remotely from the local image storage elements (112, 122, 132), storing an index of the patient images, the index including the local image storage element location of each image and the corresponding global patient identifier.
