Abstract
The invention provides methods and apparatuses for the treatment of adipose tissue. The methods comprise application of ultrasound energy to a region of adipose tissue, and the apparatuses comprise at least one source of ultrasound energy configured to direct ultrasound energy through a skin surface into the subcutaneous adipose tissue. In one embodiment, a pressure gradient is created in the region generating relative movement between fat cell constituents having different densities. In another embodiment, a protrusion of skin and underlying adipose tissue containing is formed and ultrasound energy is radiated into the adipose tissue in the protrusion. In another embodiment, an RF electric field is generated inside a region of adipose tissue together with the ultrasound energy.

164. An applicator for selective treatment of adipose tissue, the applicator comprising:
-
(a) a hollow dome having an interior chamber communicating through a port with a vacuum pump, the hollow dome configured to be applied to skin and suck into the interior chamber the skin and subcutaneous tissue, forming a protrusion protruding above the surrounding skin surface; (b) one or more moderately focused ultrasound transducers located in the interior chamber of the dome and having their focal volumes located in the protruding portion of the adipose tissue layer; and (c) a pair of RF electrodes located at the sides of the hollow dome and electrically isolated from the dome and the ultrasound transducers, the electrodes driven by an RF driver operative to provide RF to the electrodes such that when the electrodes are in contact with the skin the RF creates a high electric field in the adipose tissue. - View Dependent Claims (165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 179, 180, 181)
