1. A machine-implemented method to execute on a machine, comprising:
- identifying, by the machine, a message directed to a recipient;
determining, by the machine, when the message includes identifying information associated with a sender of the message;
authenticating, using the machine by using an identity extracted from the message for authenticating the identity of the sender and a domain used for the message;
obtaining, by the machine one or more rules for conducting authentication based on a type of authentication that is performed and a level of confidence associated with the authentication;
acquiring, by the machine, distinctive metadata;
customizing, by the machine, the distinctive metadata for the sender and the domain at an email level for the message, an email aggregation level for groups, at a domain level, and at a sub-domain level;
dynamically, by the machine, updating the distinctive metadata when the distinctive metadata is changed; and
displaying, by the machine, the distinctive metadata as a unique graphical icon in a summary listing indicating to a recipient of the that the sender and the domain is who the sender and the domain purports to be and is authenticated, the displaying occurs before the recipient opens the message, the information permits the recipient to rapidly discern that the message has been authenticated with respect to the identity of the sender and the domain, and the message remains unaltered.
