Abstract

A method for coordinating discontinuous reception (DRX) operation between a primary serving cell and a secondary serving cell includes configuring DRX parameters for the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell, performing a radio interface synchronization procedure to align a connection frame number (CFN) in both the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell, and coordinating DRX reception patterns for the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell using the aligned CFN.

Claims

1. A method for coordinating discontinuous reception (DRX) operation between a primary serving cell and a secondary serving cell, comprising:

configuring DRX parameters for the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell;

performing a radio interface synchronization procedure to align a connection frame number (CFN) in both the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell; and

coordinating DRX reception patterns for the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell using the aligned CFN.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the configuring includes any one of:

configuring a first set of DRX parameters for the primary serving cell and a second set of DRX parameters for the secondary serving cell, or configuring one set of DRX parameters for both the primary serving cell and the secondary serving cell.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the configuring includes calculating a first timing offset parameter for the primary serving cell and a second timing offset parameter for the secondary serving cell.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the reception pattern for the primary serving cell is determined according to the equation:

wherein CFN_DRX0 is a radio frame number of a high-speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) associated with a corresponding fractional dedicated physical channel for the primary serving cell, UE_DTX_DRX_Offset0 is a timing offset parameter for the primary serving cell, S_DRX0 is a HS-SCCH subframe number for the primary serving cell, and UE_DRX cycle is a parameter configured by higher layers that specifies the repetition cycle of the HS-SCCH reception pattern.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the reception pattern for the secondary serving cell is determined according to the equation:

wherein CFN_DRX1 is a radio frame number of a high-speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) associated with a corresponding fractional dedicated physical channel for the secondary serving cell, UE_DTX_DRX_Offset1 is a timing offset parameter for the secondary serving cell, S_DRX1 is a HS-SCCH subframe number for the secondary serving cell, and UE_DRX cycle is a parameter configured by higher layers that specifies the repetition cycle of the HS-SCCH reception pattern.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a DRX activation or deactivation order from a Node B of the primary serving cell or a Node B of the secondary serving cell to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU); and

transmitting information regarding the DRX activation or deactivation order from the Node B of the primary serving cell or the Node B of the secondary serving cell to a serving radio network controller (SRNC).

7. The method according to claim 6, further comprising:

receiving a command from the SRNC to activate or deactivate DRX mode at a serving Node B that did not send the DRX activation or deactivation order.

8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the command includes timing information for when to activate or deactivate DRX mode.

9. The method according to claim 7, further comprising:

transmitting a command to a WTRU to activate or deactivate DRX mode from the serving Node B that did not previously transmit the DRX activation or deactivation order.

10. A method for notification-based discontinuous reception (DRX) activation or deactivation, comprising:

transmitting an activation or deactivation order for a primary serving cell from a Node B of the primary serving cell to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU);

transmitting a corresponding DRX activation or deactivation notification from the Node B of the primary serving cell to a serving radio network controller (SRNC);

receiving a DRX activation or deactivation command at a Node B of a secondary serving cell from the SRNC; and

transmitting an activation order for the secondary serving cell from the Node B of the secondary serving cell to the WTRU.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the DRX activation or deactivation notification is transmitted to the SRNC prior to transmitting the activation or deactivation order for the primary serving cell to the WTRU.

12. The method according to claim 10, wherein the DRX activation or deactivation notification includes timing information for the activation or deactivation.

13. A method for notification-based discontinuous reception (DRX) activation or deactivation, comprising:

transmitting a DRX activation or deactivation request from a Node B of a primary serving cell to a serving radio network controller (SRNC);

receiving a DRX activation or deactivation grant at the primary Node B from the SRNC; and

transmitting a DRX activation or deactivation order for the primary serving cell and a secondary serving cell from the primary Node B to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU).

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the DRX activation or deactivation grant includes timing information for when the primary Node B is to transmit the DRX activation or deactivation order to the WTRU.

15. The method according to claim 13, wherein on a condition that the SRNC does not grant the DRX activation or deactivation request, the SRNC transmits a negative acknowledgement to the primary Node B.

16. The method according to claim 13, wherein on a condition that the SRNC does not grant the DRX activation or deactivation request and a timer at the primary Node B expires prior to receiving the DRX activation or deactivation grant, then the primary Node B determines that the request was not granted.

17. The method according to claim 13, further comprising:

sending a DRX activation or deactivation command from the SRNC to a Node B of the secondary serving cell.
