Abstract

A system and method is provided for an ATM having a display, a logic server coupled to the display, and a memory coupled to the logic server. The logic server dynamically controls the functions available to the users including messages and coupons. A host contains a profile of a user. The memory, which is accessible to the logic server, may contain a profile of at least one user. A user card may contain a profile of the user. In operation, the ATM detects the a user'"'"'s card and requests the profile of the user whose card was detected from a host. The ATM then receives the user'"'"'s profile and stores the user'"'"'s profile in the ATM. The system and method also provides a cardless ATM in which a user logs on without a card. Additionally, system and method also provides ATM services via a personal device.

Claims

1. A method, comprising;

detecting a login request, by a processor, from a customer, at a financial transaction device, the financial transaction device comprising a user interface and memory and is operated by a first financial institution;

identifying a status of the customer that comprises identifying a financial institution associated with the customer, the customer being associated with a second financial institution that is different than the first financial institution;

requesting a profile of the customer, the profile being based upon the customer'"'"'s association with the second financial institution;

receiving a transaction request at the financial transaction device

creating a message, for the customer, comprising information regarding a fee associated with using the financial transaction device based on the association of the customer with the second financial institution.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the financial transaction device is an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting the message to the customer using one or more of the following;

Internet message, phone message, or email.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying the message for the customer at the financial transaction device.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

detecting a subsequent login request from the customer;

receiving a subsequent transaction request based upon the subsequent login request; and

updating the profile of the customer based upon the subsequent transaction request.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the second financial institution is a home bank of the customer that comprises a financial institution through which the customer maintains at least one account.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the message is based on the home bank and describes services available from the first financial institution that are not available from the home bank.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the message describes services available from the first financial institution.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

modifying or personalizing functions presented to the customer at the financial transaction device that are based upon the profile.

10. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

modifying or personalizing functions presented to the customer at the financial transaction device that are based upon the subsequent transaction request.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the processor, a communication comprising the login request from a portable electronic device associated with the customer;

logging the user into the financial transaction device using information contained in the communication.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the portable electronic device comprises a personal digital assistant, a cell phone, an email device, or a portable computing device.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the communication is transmitted over a network comprising a wireless network.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the message is constructed based on an analysis of the profile based upon application of at one business rule to determine the message contents.

15. A method, comprising:

detecting, by a processor, a login request at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), wherein the ATM is communicatively coupled to a host through a computer network, and the ATM comprises a user interface and a logic server;

identifying a home bank of the user wherein the home bank of the user is at least one bank or financial institution through which the user maintains at least one account;

requesting a profile of the user wherein the user'"'"'s profile comprises information about the home bank of the user and a set of at least one user selected preference;

modifying or personalizing functions presented to the user via the ATM in response to the user'"'"'s profile wherein the functions presented are modified or personalized based on the home bank of the user and the set of at least one user selected preference;

displaying, at the ATM, a message informing the user a method of avoiding a fee associated with the ATM.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the login request is received from a card.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the login request is received from a device other than a card.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the user'"'"'s profile is received from a host.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the user'"'"'s profile is received from the card.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the user'"'"'s profile is received from a memory operably connected to the ATM.

21. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising the step of:

sending a message to the user, wherein the message comprises one or more of the following;

Internet message, phone message, email, and regular mail.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the message comprises a method of avoiding a fee associated with the ATM.

23. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

storing, electronically, the user'"'"'s profile at the ATM.
