Abstract

According to an illustrative embodiment, a data transmission device is provided. The device includes a communication unit for transmitting data to a receiver and transmitting data having a changed characteristic to the receiver, wherein when transmitting the data the device transmits timing information to the receiver indicating a time that the device will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

Claims

1. A data transmission device, comprising:

a wireless communication unit for transmitting data to a receiver and transmitting data having a changed characteristic to the receiver,

wherein when transmitting the data the device transmits timing information to the receiver indicating a time that the device will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

2. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the device begins generating the data having a changed characteristic before transmitting the timing information to the receiver.

3. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the device begins generating the data having a changed characteristic after transmitting the timing information to the receiver.

4. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the device detects a change in transmission conditions and sets the time according to the detected change.

5. The device as recited in claim 4, wherein the device detects the change according to the frequency of a request for retransmission generated by the receiver.

The device as recited in claim 1, further comprising a resolution processing unit, and wherein the data is image data of a first resolution and the resolution processing unit generates the data having a changed characteristic by converting the data of a first resolution into image data of a second resolution different from the first resolution.

The device as recited in claim 6, further comprising a packet generation unit, and wherein when the device is transmitting data the packet generation unit applies a first compression to the data prior to transmission, and when the transmitter is transmitting data having a changed characteristic the packet generation unit applies a second compression, different from the first compression to the data having a changed characteristic.

8. The device as recited in claim 6, further comprising a packet generation unit, and wherein the data and the data having a changed characteristic is transmitted in the form of packets generated by the packet generation unit and the timing information is in included in a packet header.

9. The device as recite in claim 1, further comprising a resolution processing unit and a packet generation unit, and wherein when the device begins transmitting data having a changed characteristic the processing performed by at least one of the resolution processing unit and the packet generation unit is changed.

10. A method of data transmission, comprising:

transmitting data from a transmitter to a receiver; and

transmitting data having a changed characteristic from the transmitter to the receiver,

wherein during the step of transmitting data the transmitter transmits timing information to the receiver indicating a time that the transmitter will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

11. A data receiving device, comprising:

a wireless communication unit for receiving data from a transmitter and receiving data having a changed characteristic from the transmitter,

wherein when receiving the data the device receives timing information from the transmitter indicating a time that the transmitter will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

12. The device as recited in claim 11, further comprising a decoder for decoding the data and the data having the changed characteristic.

13. The device as recited in claim 12, further comprising a control unit for controlling processing by the decoder according to the timing information.

14. The device as recited in claim 11, wherein the data and the data having a changed characteristic is image data.

15. The device as recited in claim 14, further comprising a display unit for displaying the data and the data having a changed characteristic.

16. The device as recited in claim 15, further comprising a scaler for adjusting the resolution of the data and the data having a changed characteristic to conform to the resolution of the display unit.

17. The device as recited in claim 16, further comprising a control unit for controlling processing by the scaler according to the timing information.

18. A method of receiving data, comprising:

receiving data from a transmitter and receiving data having a changed characteristic from the transmitter,

wherein during the step of receiving data timing information is received from the transmitter indicating a time that the transmitter will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

19. A communication system, comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting data and for transmitting data having a changed characteristic; and

a receiver for receiving the data and the data having a changed characteristic,

wherein when the transmitter is transmitting the data the transmitter transmits timing information to the receiver indicating a time that the transmitter will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

20. A data transmission device, comprising:

a communication unit for transmitting data to a receiver and transmitting data having a changed characteristic to the receiver,

wherein when transmitting the data the device transmits timing information to the receiver indicating a time that the device will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

21. The device as recited in claim 20, wherein the device begins generating the data having a changed characteristic before transmitting the timing information to the receiver.

22. The device as recited in claim 20, wherein the device begins generating the data having a changed characteristic after transmitting the timing information to the receiver.

23. The device as recited in claim 20, wherein the device detects a change in transmission conditions and sets the time according to the detected change.

24. The device as recited in claim 23, wherein the device detects the change according to the frequency of a request for retransmission generated by the receiver.

25. The device as recited in claim 20, further comprising a resolution processing unit, and wherein the data is image data of a first resolution and the resolution processing unit generates the data having a changed characteristic by converting the data of a first resolution into image data of a second resolution different from the first resolution.

26. The device as recited in claim 25, further comprising a packet generation unit, and wherein when the device is transmitting data the packet generation unit applies a first compression to the data prior to transmission, and when the transmitter is transmitting data having a changed characteristic the packet generation unit applies a second compression, different from the first compression to the data having a changed characteristic.

27. The device as recited in claim 25, further comprising a packet generation unit, and wherein the data and the data having a changed characteristic is transmitted in the form of packets generated by the packet generation unit and the timing information is in included in a packet header.

28. The device as recite in claim 20, further comprising a resolution processing unit and a packet generation unit, and wherein when the device begins transmitting data having a changed characteristic the processing performed by at least one of the resolution processing unit and the packet generation unit is changed.

29. A data receiving device, comprising:

a communication unit for receiving data from a transmitter and receiving data having a changed characteristic from the transmitter,

wherein when receiving the data the device receives timing information from the transmitter indicating a time that the transmitter will begin transmitting the data having a changed characteristic.

30. The device as recited in claim 29, further comprising a decoder for decoding the data and the data having the changed characteristic.

31. The device as recited in claim 30, further comprising a control unit for controlling processing by the decoder according to the timing information.

32. The device as recited in claim 29, wherein the data and the data having a changed characteristic is image data.

33. The device as recited in claim 32, further comprising a display unit for displaying the data and the data having a changed characteristic.

34. The device as recited in claim 33, further comprising a scaler for adjusting the resolution of the data and the data having a changed characteristic to conform to the resolution of the display unit.

35. The device as recited in claim 34, further comprising a control unit for controlling processing by the scaler according to the timing information.
