Abstract

A polymeric riser cap member includes a central tubular section defining a generally cylindrical bore for receiving a sprinkler riser, the central tubular section having open top and bottom ends, and an annular skirt coaxial with the central tubular section and having an inner diameter larger than an inner diameter of the central tubular section. The annular skirt has an inner surface having internal threads threadably connectable with the externally threaded surface of a tubular riser adapter member of a tubular coupler. The bottom end of the central tubular section has an annular projection disposed opposite and spaced from a portion of the annular skirt. The riser cap member includes an annular recess adapted to receive a seal located in a wall extending laterally between the annular skirt and the annular projection.

Claims

1. An irrigation pipe system, comprising:

a tubular coupler member having at least one open end adapted for connection to a fluid transport pipe, the tubular coupler member having a tubular riser adapter member in fluid communication with a central region thereof, the tubular riser adapter member having an externally threaded surface;

a riser cap member having a central tubular section defining a generally cylindrical bore for receiving a sprinkler riser, the central tubular section having open top and bottom ends, and an annular skirt coaxial with the central tubular section and having an inner diameter larger than an inner diameter of the central tubular section, the annular skirt having an inner surface having internal threads threadably connectable with the externally threaded surface of the tubular riser adapter member; and

a seal;

whereby the riser cap member is connected to the tubular riser adapter member of the tubular coupler member by inserting the bottom end of the central tubular section inside of the tubular riser adapter member and threadably connecting the internal threads of the annular skirt to the externally threaded surface of the tubular riser adapter member, with the seal disposed between the tubular riser adapter member and the riser cap member.

The irrigation pipe system of claim 1, wherein the tubular riser adapter member has a first tubular section and a second tubular section, the first and second tubular sections connected by a shoulder, the second tubular section having an internal diameter greater than an internal diameter of the first tubular section, wherein the bottom end of the central tubular section has an annular projection spaced from and opposite a portion of the annular skirt adapted to be seated on the shoulder when the riser cap member is connected to the tubular riser adapter member.

3. The irrigation pipe system of claim 2, wherein an outer diameter of a portion of the annular projection is approximately equal to the internal diameter of the second tubular section.

The irrigation pipe system of claim 3, further comprising a sprinkler riser having a first end disposed within the central tubular section of the riser cap member, the sprinkler riser being permanently bonded to the riser cap member, the first end of the sprinkler riser being disposed in the second tubular section of the riser adapter member.

5. The irrigation pipe system of claim 1, wherein the riser cap member comprises an annular recess adapted to receive the seal located in a wall extending laterally between the central tubular section and the annular skirt.

6. The irrigation pipe system of claim 5, wherein the seal comprises an O-ring.

7. The irrigation pipe system of claim 1, further comprising:

an annular flange extending radially from an outer surface of the central tubular section between the top and bottom ends thereof, wherein the annular skirt depends from the annular flange; and

a plurality of reinforcing members spaced around the central tubular member and extending between the outer surface of the central tubular member and the annular flange.

8. The irrigation pipe system of claim 1, further comprising a sprinkler riser having a first end disposed within the central tubular section of the riser cap member.

9. The irrigation pipe system of claim 8, wherein the sprinkler riser is bonded to the riser cap member.

10. The irrigation pipe system of claim 8, wherein the sprinkler riser is bonded to the riser cap member with a solvent weld.

11. The irrigation pipe system of claim 10, wherein both the sprinkler riser and the riser cap member are formed from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

12. The irrigation pipe system of claim 1, wherein the sprinkler riser is formed from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

13. A combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser for connection in a piping system to a tubular coupler member having at least one open end adapted for connection to a fluid transport pipe, the tubular coupler member having a tubular riser adapter member in fluid communication with a central region thereof, the tubular riser adapter member having an externally threaded surface, the combined riser cap member and sprinkle riser comprising:

a riser cap member having a central tubular section defining a generally cylindrical bore, and an annular skirt coaxial with the central tubular section and having an inner diameter larger than an inner diameter of the central tubular section, the annular skirt having an inner surface having internal threads threadably connectable with the externally threaded surface of the tubular riser adapter member; and

a sprinkler riser having a first end disposed within the cylindrical bore of the riser cap member, the sprinkler riser being bonded to the riser cap member.

14. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser of claim 13, wherein the sprinkler riser is permanently bonded to the riser cap member.

15. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler rise of claim 14, wherein the sprinkler riser is bonded to the riser cap member with a solvent weld.

16. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser of claim 14, wherein both the sprinkler riser and the riser cap member are formed from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

17. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser of claim 13, wherein a bottom end of the central tubular section has an annular projection opposite and spaced from a portion of the annular skirt.

18. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser of claim 17, wherein the riser cap member includes an annular recess adapted to receive a seal located in a wall extending laterally between the annular skirt and the annular projection.

19. The combined riser cap member and sprinkler riser of claim 13, further comprising:

an annular flange extending radially from an outer surface of the central tubular section between top and bottom ends thereof, wherein the annular skirt depends from the annular flange; and

a plurality of reinforcing members spaced around the central tubular member and extending between the outer surface of the central tubular member and the annular flange.

20. A polymeric riser cap member for connecting a sprinkler riser in a piping system to a tubular coupler member having at least one open end adapted for connection to a fluid transport pipe, the tubular coupler member having a tubular riser adapter member in fluid communication with a central region thereof, the tubular riser adapter member having an externally threaded surface, the riser cap member comprising:

a central tubular section defining a generally cylindrical bore for receiving a sprinkler riser, the central tubular section having open top and bottom ends, and an annular skirt coaxial with the central tubular section and having an inner diameter larger than an inner diameter of the central tubular section, the annular skirt having an inner surface having internal threads threadably connectable with the externally threaded surface of the tubular riser adapter member, the bottom end of the central tubular section having an annular projection disposed opposite and spaced from a portion of the annular skirt, wherein the riser cap member includes an annular recess adapted to receive a seal located in a wall extending laterally between the annular skirt and the annular projection.
