Abstract

A clot removal device and method for removing a clot from a blood vessel may employ a tubular clot capture element. The clot capture element may be configured for deployment in a blood vessel for surrounding a clot. The clot capture element may have an opening therein configured to receive and guide a clot engaging element and may be configured to radially contract upon retraction, such that when the clot capture element surrounds a clot and is retracted in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel, the clot capture element is configured to exert a radially inward compression force on the clot.

Claims

1. A clot removal device, comprising:

a tubular clot capture element, wherein the clot capture element is configured for deployment in a blood vessel for surrounding a clot, the clot capture element having an opening therein configured to receive and guide a clot engaging element, the clot capture element being configured to radially contract upon retraction, such that when the clot capture element surrounds a clot and is retracted in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel, the clot capture element is configured to exert a radially inward compression force on the clot.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the clot capture element is in the form of a mesh-like structure.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the mesh-like structure is a net.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the net is braided.

5. The device of claim 3, wherein the net includes a plurality of crossing braids, and wherein each of the plurality of crossing braids are movable relative to one another.

6. The device of claim 3, wherein the net includes a plurality of wires, a proximal end, and a distal end, and wherein the proximal and distal ends are free of open ends of wires.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the clot engaging element includes a coil and a shaft connected to the coil.

8. The device of claim 1, further comprising a control shaft, wherein the clot capture element includes a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein the control shaft extends from the proximal end.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein when the control shaft and the clot capture element are configured such that when the control shaft is retracted in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel, the clot capture element is retracted in the longitudinal direction of the blood vessel.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein when the clot capture element is configured such that when retracted in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel, the clot capture element exerts a longitudinal shearing force on the clot.

11. A method of removing a clot from a blood vessel comprising the steps of:

deploying a tubular clot capture element in a blood vessel, the clot capture element having an opening therein that receives and guides a clot engaging element;

surrounding a clot with the clot capture element; and

retracting the clot capture element in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel, such that the clot capture element radially contracts, exerting a radially inward compression force on the clot.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the clot capture element is in the form of a mesh-like structure.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the mesh-like structure is in the form of a net.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the net is braided.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the net includes a plurality of crossing braids, and wherein each of the plurality of crossing braids are movable relative to one another.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the net includes a plurality of wires, a proximal end, and a distal end, and wherein the proximal and distal ends are free of open ends of wires.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the clot engaging element includes a coil and a shaft connected to the coil.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the clot capture element includes a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein a control shaft extends from the proximal end.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the clot capture element is retracted via a control shaft that extends from the clot capture element.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein retracting the clot capture element in a longitudinal direction of the blood vessel includes exerting a longitudinal shearing force on the clot.
