Abstract

The invention is directed to Pd-based metallic glass alloys useful in biomedical applications having no Ni or Cu. Exemplary metallic glass alloys are represented by A_aB_b{(Si)_100-c(D)_c}_d, where A may be selected from Pd, and combinations of Pd and Pt, B may be selected from Ag, Au, Co, Fe, and combinations thereof, and D may be selected from P, Ge, B, S. Also, a, b, c and d are atomic percentages, and a ranges from about 60 to about 90, b ranges from about 2 to about 18, d ranges from about 5 to about 25, and c is greater than 0 and less than 100.

Claims

1. A metallic glass comprising a biocompatible alloy represented by Formula 1:

Pd_aX_bSi_cP_dGe_e

wherein;

X is Ag, Au, or a combination of Ag and Au,

a is an atomic percent ranging from about 74 to about 86,

b is an atomic percent ranging from about 2 to about 5,

c is an atomic percent ranging from about 8 to about 10,

d is an atomic percent ranging from about 4 to about 8, and

e is an atomic percent ranging from about 0 to about 3.

2. The metallic glass of claim 1, wherein a is between 78.5 and 81.5, b is between 2.75 and 4.25, c is between 8.75 and 9.75, d is between 5 and 7, and e is between 1.5 and 2.5.

3. The metallic glass of claim 1, wherein X is Ag.

The metallic glass of claim 1, wherein the alloy is selected from the group consisting of Pd_78.5Ag₅Si₈₅P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag_4.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag₄Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₀Ag_3.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd_80.5Ag₃Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₁Ag_2.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag₃Si₁₀P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₀Ag₃Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag₄Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag_3.5Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag₃Si_9.5P₆Ge₂, and Pd₇₉Ag_3.5Si_9.5P₆Ge₂.

5. A three-dimensional object formed of a metallic glass comprising a biocompatible alloy represented by Formula 1:

wherein;

X is Ag, Au, or a combination of Ag and Au,

a is an atomic percent ranging from about 74 to about 86,

b is an atomic percent ranging from about 2 to about 5,

c is an atomic percent ranging from about 8 to about 10,

d is an atomic percent ranging from about 4 to about 8, and

e is an atomic percent ranging from about 0 to about 3.

6. The three dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object has a critical casting thickness greater than about 3 mm.

7. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object has a critical casting thickness ranging from about 3 mm to about 6 mm.

8. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object has a critical casting thickness ranging of greater than 6 mm.

9. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object is a biomedical component.

10. The three-dimensional object of claim 9, wherein the biomedical component is a dental or orthodontic component.

11. The three-dimensional object of claim 9, wherein the biomedical component is an orthopedic component.

12. The three-dimensional object of claim 9, wherein the biomedical component is an implant or fixation device.

13. The three-dimensional object of claim 9, wherein the biomedical component is an orthodontic bracket or wire.

14. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object is a jewelry article.

15. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the three-dimensional object is a watch component or device.

16. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein a is between 78.5 and 81.5, b is between 2.75 and 4.25, c is between 8.75 and 9.75, d is between 5 and 7, and e is between 1.5 and 2.5.

17. The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein X is Ag.

The three-dimensional object of claim 5, wherein the biocompatible alloy is selected from the group consisting of Pd_78.5Ag₅Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag_4.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag₄Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₀Ag_3.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd_80.5Ag₃Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₁Ag_2.5Si_8.5P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag₃Si₁₀P₆Ge₂, Pd₈₀Ag₃Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd₇₉Ag₄Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag_3.5Si₉P₆Ge₂, Pd_79.5Ag₃Si_9.5P₆Ge₂, and Pd₇₉Ag_3.5Si_9.5P₆Ge₂.
