Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims

1. A method for calibrating a continuous glucose monitoring system, comprising:

positioning at least a portion of an electrochemical glucose sensor in a body of a user;

obtaining a signal from the electrochemical glucose sensor;

determining, using a processor, a rate of change of the obtained signal; and

determining, using the processor, whether calibration is appropriate based on the determined rate of change.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining whether calibration is appropriate comprises comparing the determined rate of change to a predetermined value.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the predetermined value is approximately 1 mg/dL per minute or less.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein, when the determined rate of change is above the predetermined value, determining that calibration is not appropriate.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising waiting a predetermined time period before performing calibration.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the predetermined value is approximately 1.5 mg/dL per minute.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein, when the determined rate of change is below the predetermined value, determining that calibration is appropriate.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing calibration using a blood sample to calibrate the electrochemical glucose sensor signal.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining an acceleration of the obtained signal, wherein determining whether calibration is appropriate is based on the determined acceleration of the obtained signal.

10. A method for calibrating a continuous glucose monitoring system, comprising:

positioning at least a portion of a glucose sensor in a body of a user;

obtaining a plurality of signals from the glucose sensor;

determining, using a processor, an acceleration of glucose level increase or decrease based on the obtained signal; and

determining, using the processor, whether calibration is appropriate based on the determined acceleration.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein determining whether calibration is appropriate comprises comparing the determined acceleration to a predetermined value.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein, when the determined acceleration is above the predetermined value, determining that calibration is not appropriate.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising waiting a predetermined time period before performing calibration when it is determined that calibration is not appropriate.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein, when the determined acceleration is below the predetermined value, determining that calibration is appropriate.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising performing calibration using a blood sample to calibrate the signals from the glucose sensor.
