Abstract

A power distribution and management system within a vehicle operates to provide power over Ethernet to a plurality of powered devices coupled to a vehicular communication network of the vehicle.

Claims

1. A network node module within a vehicle, comprising:

a first configurable port coupled to a first Ethernet link of a plurality of Ethernet links of a vehicular communication network;

a second configurable port coupled to a second Ethernet link of the plurality of Ethernet links of the vehicular communication network; and

a processing module for configuring each of the first configurable port and the second configurable port as one of either a power sourcing port for providing power to downstream powered devices and a powered device port for receiving power from master power sourcing equipment.

2. The network node module of claim 1, wherein, in a first mode, the processing module configures the first configurable port as the power sourcing port and the second configurable port as the powered device port.

3. The network node module of claim 2, wherein, in the first mode, the second configurable port is coupled to first master power sourcing equipment via the second Ethernet link.

4. The network node module of claim 3, wherein, in a second mode, the processing module configures the first configurable port as the powered device port and the second configurable port as the powered device port.

5. The network node module of claim 4, wherein, in the second mode, the first configurable port is coupled to one of the first master power sourcing equipment and second master power sourcing equipment via the first Ethernet link.

6. The network node module of claim 4, further comprising:

a first power sourcing interface coupled to the first configurable port, the first power sourcing interface being enabled by the processing module in the first mode;

a first powered device interface coupled to the first configurable port, the first powered device interface being enabled by the processing module in the second mode;

a second power sourcing interface coupled to the second configurable port, the second power sourcing interface being enabled by the processing module in the second mode; and

a second powered device interface coupled to the second configurable port, the second powered device interface being enabled by the processing module in the first mode.

7. The network node module of claim 6, wherein, in a third mode, the processing module configures the first configurable port as the powered device port and the second configurable port as the powered device port by enabling the first powered device interface and the second power device interface.

8. The network node module of claim 7, wherein the processing module further:

receives an instruction from the master power sourcing equipment to configure the first configurable port and the second configurable port in accordance with one of the first mode, the second mode and the third mode; and

configures the first configurable port and the second configurable port based on the instruction.

9. The network node module of claim 7, further comprising:

a first switch for selectively coupling the first configurable port to one of the first power sourcing interface and the first powered device interface; and

a second switch for selectively coupling the second configurable port to one of the second power sourcing interface and the second powered device interface.

10. The network node module of claim 9, wherein the processing module further:

generates a first signal to control the first switch; and

generates a second signal to control the second switch.

11. The network node module of claim 7, wherein the processing module further:

determines whether a disable signal for at least one of the first configurable port and the second configurable port has been received from the master power sourcing equipment; and

if so, disables at least one of the first configurable port and the second configurable port based on the disable signal.

12. The network node module of claim 11, wherein the processing module further:

configures the one of the first configurable port and the second configurable port not disabled as the powered device port to receive power from the master power sourcing equipment.

13. The network node module of claim 1, wherein the powered device port is coupled to the master power sourcing equipment via one or more powered devices.

14. The network node module of claim 1, further comprising:

a power management module for communicating with the master power sourcing equipment via at least one of the first configurable port and the second configurable port.

15. The network node module of claim 14, wherein the power management module communicates with first master power sourcing equipment via the first configurable port and second master power sourcing equipment via the second configurable port.

16. The network node module of claim 14, wherein the power management module further manages the power provided to the downstream powered devices via the power sourcing port.

17. The network node module of claim 16, wherein the power management module further:

reallocates power to the downstream powered devices in a chain of powered devices via the power sourcing port; and

communicates with the master power sourcing equipment regarding the reallocation of power via the powered device port.

18. The network node module of claim 14, further comprising:

two or more separately powered devices, the power management module further managing power provided internally to the two or more separately powered devices.

19. The network node module of claim 14, wherein the power management module further receives a message from the master power sourcing equipment instructing the power management module to do at least one of the following:

disable power to at least one of the two or more separately powered devices, resume power to at least one of the two or more separately powered devices, provide information back to the master power sourcing equipment or wait for further instructions.

20. The network node module of claim 19, wherein the power management module further:

monitors a current draw of each of the two or more separately powered devices; and

transmits the current draw of each of the two or more separately powered devices to the master power sourcing equipment.
