Abstract

A method executed on an access device includes receiving a markup language file where the markup language file contains a portion of primary text and a portion of secondary text. The method also includes receiving a page number map and utilizing the page number map to render the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page. Another exemplary method includes displaying the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page. In yet another exemplary method, the page number map contains a first print page break lineage and a first character offset for the portion of primary text and a second print page break lineage and a second character offset for the portion of secondary text.

Claims

1. A method as executed on an access device comprising:

a. receiving a markup language file, the markup language file comprising a portion of primary text and a portion of secondary text;

b. receiving a page number map; and

c. utilizing the page number map to render the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising purchasing an electronic book, the electronic book comprising the markup language file.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

a. providing a set of user credentials for authentication; and

b. in response to a successful authentication of the set of user credentials, receiving the markup language file and the page number map.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the page number map comprises a first print page break lineage and a first character offset for the portion of primary text and a second print page break lineage and a second character offset for the portion of secondary text.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the markup language file is a XML file.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the portion of primary text is a portion of a legal treatise.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the portion of secondary text is at least one footnote.

9. A method comprising:

a. transmitting a markup language file , the markup language file comprising a portion of primary text and a portion of secondary text, the portion of primary text being associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text being associated with the print page; and

b. transmitting a page number map, the page number map adapted to render the portion of primary text and the portion of secondary text.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising storing a purchased electronic book, the purchased electronic book comprising the markup language file.

11. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

a. authenticating a set of user credentials; and

b. in response to successfully authenticating the set of user credentials, transmitting the markup language file and the page number map.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the page number map comprises a first print page break lineage and a first character offset for the portion of primary text and a second print page break lineage and a second character offset for the portion of secondary text.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the markup language file is a XML file.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the portion of primary text is a portion of a legal treatise.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the portion of secondary text is at least one footnote.

16. An access device comprising:

a. a processor;

b. a memory coupled to the processor; and

c. an eReader software program stored in the memory for execution by the processor, the eReader software program comprising;

i. an eReader content storage module configured to receive a markup language file and a page number map, the markup language file comprising a portion of primary text and a portion of secondary text;

ii. a page extractor module configured to utilize the page number map; and

iii. a display render module configured to render the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page.

17. The device of claim 16 wherein the page number map comprises a first print page break lineage and a first character offset for the portion of primary text and a second print page break lineage and a second character offset for the portion of secondary text.

18. The device of claim 16 wherein the eReader content storage module is configured to store the markup language and the page number map.

19. The device of claim 16 further comprising a display and wherein the eReader software program is configured to display the portion of primary text associated with a print page and the portion of secondary text associated with the print page on the display.

20. The device of claim 16 wherein the markup language file is a XML file.

21. The device of claim 16 wherein the portion of primary text is a portion of a legal treatise.

22. The device of claim 19 wherein the portion of secondary text is a footnote.
