Abstract

A system and method for the transport and distribution of both AC (alternating current) power and DC (direct current) power over wiring infrastructure normally used for distributing AC power only, for example, residential and/or commercial buildings'"'"' electrical wires is disclosed and taught. The system and method permits the combining of AC and DC power sources and the simultaneous distribution of the resulting power over the same wiring. At the utilization site a complementary device permits the separation of the DC power from the AC power and their reconstruction, for use in conventional AC-only and DC-only devices.

Claims

1. A method for simultaneous distribution of AC and DC power, the method comprising:

combining an AC power source signal and a DC power source signal;

simultaneously distributing an AC power signal representative of the AC power source signal and a DC power signal representative of the DC power source signal over a single power signal carrying system; and

separating an output DC power signal from an output AC power signal at a utilization site.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the combining comprises multiplexing and the separating comprises demultiplexing.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of combining comprises time-division multiplexing and the step of separating comprises demultiplexing.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the output DC power signal is approximately 50% of the DC power source signal and the output AC power signal is approximately 50% of the AC power source signal.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the single power signal carrying system comprises an AC wiring.

6. A system for simultaneous distribution of AC and DC power, the system comprising:

a power combiner configured to combine a source AC power signal with a source DC power signal

a power signal distribution system configured to simultaneously distribute a combined AC power and DC power; and

a power separator configured to separate an output DC power from an output AC power at a utilization site.

7. The system according to claim 6, wherein the power combiner comprises MUX, DEMUX, and the “

off”

times of a PWM power switching device to apply and transport the combined AC power and DC power.

8. The system according to claim 7, wherein the source DC power signal is pulse-Width modulated and time-complementary to a modulated version of the source AC power version.

9. The system according to claim 7, wherein the combined AC power and DC power signal comprises the modulated AC power signal is applied during “

on”

periods, and the pulse-width modulated DC power is applied during “

off”

times of the modulated AC power signal.

10. The system according to claim 6, wherein the power separator is synchronized with a MUX/PWM of the power combiner, and separates the modulated AC power signal, represented as sine wave components from the modulated DC power signal components via a high frequency power demultiplexer.

11. The system according to claim 10, wherein a resulting signal comprises a chopped AC power signal and a chopped DC power signal.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein the chopped AC power signal and the chopped DC power signal are low-pass filtered for AC power signal and DC power signal reconstruction.

13. A power system comprising:

a DC power source configured to produce a DC power source signal;

an AC power source configured to produce an AC power signal;

a power combiner configured to combine the AC power signal with the DC power signal, the power combiner configured to create a chopped AC signal and a chopped DC signal, wherein the chopped DC signal is “

On”

when the chopped AC signal is “

Off”

;

a combined power distribution means, the combined power distribution means configured to distribute a combined AC and DC power signal from the power combiner to a power utilization site; and

a power separator at the power utilization site, the power separator configured to separate and reconstruct an output AC power signal and an output DC power signal from the combined AC and DC power signal, wherein the output AC power signal is approximately 50% of the AC power signal and the output DC power signal is approximately 50% of the DC power signal.
