Abstract

A point of sale system and method for consummating sales transactions and enabling sporting event betting. The point of sale system includes a cash register, an event server, and a customer interface. The cash register consummates point of sale transactions and accepts cash, credit and debit payments. The event server communicates with the cash register for communicating sporting event choices to the cash register. The customer interface communicates with the cash register and includes a display for displaying at least one of said sporting event choices to a customer. The customer interface includes an input module for enabling a customer to select at least one of said sporting event choices and for enabling a customer to place a wager on the selected sporting event choice. The system also includes a printer in communication with the cash register to print a transaction receipt including a description of the selected sporting event choice and the wager. The point of sale system communicates with a risk management server that calculates the odds of each wager. In one embodiment of the invention, the wager, the odds and a description of the sporting event are printed on the receipt in addition to the point of sale transactional information such descriptions of items purchased, cost of each item, subtotal, tax and total.

Claims

1. A receipt from a point of sale terminal to enable sporting event betting, comprising:

a list of items purchased including a price for each item;

a tax line item, subtotal line item and a total; and

a sporting event description imprinted on the receipt identifying a sporting event.

2. A receipt as set forth in claim 1, wherein the receipt includes a wager imprinted on the receipt, the wager being associated with the sporting event.

3. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes odds information imprinted on the receipt, pertaining to the sporting event.

4. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes a change amount, wherein the change amount equals the wager.

5. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes a change amount, wherein the wager exceeds the change amount.

6. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes a date and time imprinted on the receipt, the date and time representing the anticipated moment of commencement of the sporting event.

7. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes a date and time imprinted on the receipt, the date and time representing the anticipated moment of completion of the sporting event.

8. A receipt as set forth in claim 2, wherein the receipt includes a barcode imprinted on the receipt, the barcode encoding the sporting event description and the wager to enable the receipt to be scanned by a barcode reader and to facilitate prompt payout after completion of the sporting event.

9. A point of sale system for consummating sales transactions and enabling sporting event betting, comprising:

a cash register for accepting payments;

an event server in communication with the cash register for communicating sporting event choices to the cash register;

a customer interface in communication with the cash register, the customer interface having a display for displaying at least one of said sporting event choices, and an input module for enabling a customer to select at least one of said sporting event choices and for enabling a customer to place a wager on the selected sporting event choice; and

a printer in communication with the cash register to print a transaction receipt including a description of the selected sporting event choice and the wager.

10. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the event server stores and communicates a sporting event schedule including sporting event commencement times to the cash register to enable the customer interface to display the sporting event commencement times.

11. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the printer prints a barcode on the transaction receipt, the barcode representing the sporting event choice and the wager to enable the receipt to be scanned by a barcode reader.

12. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the printer prints a receipt that includes a date and time representing the anticipated time of commencement of the sporting event.

13. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the printer prints a receipt that includes a date and time representing the anticipated time of completion of the sporting event.

14. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sporting event choices include animal races.

15. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sporting event choices include horse races.

16. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sporting event choices have commencement times, and the commencement times occur in intervals of less than three minutes apart.

17. A point of sale system as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sporting event choices have commencement times, and the commencement times occur in intervals of less than one minute apart.

18. A method for consummating sales transactions and enabling sporting event betting, comprising:

providing a cash register for accepting payments and an event server in communication with the cash register for communicating sporting event choices to the cash register;

providing a customer interface in communication with the cash register, the customer interface having a display for displaying at least one of said sporting event choices, and an input module for enabling a customer to select at least one of said sporting event choices, and place a wager on the selected sporting event choice;

providing a printer in communication with the cash register to print a transaction receipt including a description of the selected sporting event choice and the wager;

displaying sporting event choices on the customer interface;

enabling a customer to select a sporting event choice with the input module;

enabling a customer to place a wager with the input module; and

printing a receipt including the sporting event choice and the wager.

19. The method as set forth in claim 18, wherein the step of printing includes printing a barcode encoding the event choice and wager.

20. The method as set forth in claim 19, wherein the cash register includes a bar code reader, and the method further comprises reading the barcode with the barcode reader.

21. The method as set forth in claim 19 further comprising providing a risk management server in communication with the cash register, the risk management server calculates odds for the wager and communicates the odds to the cash register, the printer prints the odds on the receipt.
