Abstract

Various embodiments of the invention may allow applications and information to be clustered together in ways that simplify and automate various tasks. Other embodiments may present a graphical user interface to the user that allows the user to choose from a matrix of information categories and applications that can help provide that information. Still other embodiments may provide different user interface methods based on status awareness.

Claims

1. An apparatus for communicating and providing information, comprising

a handheld electronic device for operation by a user, the electronic device comprising a processor, a memory, and a touchscreen, wherein the device is to present a graphics display on the touchscreen, the graphics display configured to show multiple icons;

wherein the icons represent at least a portion of a matrix of selections, with categories represented along one axis of the matrix and applications represented along another axis of the matrix;

wherein selection of an icon by the user is to result in operation of the selected application as applied to the selected category.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein only one category at a time is to be displayed in the graphics display, with a procedure for changing the display from one category to another category.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the graphics display is to include additional icons external to the matrix, wherein selection of one of the additional icons is to result in performing an operation that would also be performed by selecting one category and one application from the matrix.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

said at least a portion of the matrix is to be displayed as being on a first face of a virtual polyhedron; and

the virtual polyhedron is to be rotated to display a second face containing a different portion of the matrix.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, where the rotation is to be caused by touching a part of the first face on the touchscreen and dragging across the touchscreen in a particular direction.

6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the virtual polyhedron is a virtual cube.

7. A method of providing information to a user with a handheld electronic device, comprising:

presenting a graphics display on a touchscreen of a handheld device, the graphics display configured to show multiple icons;

wherein the icons represent at least a portion of a matrix of selections, with categories represented along one axis of the matrix and applications represented along another axis of the matrix;

wherein selection of an icon by the user results in operation of the selected application as applied to the selected category.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein:

only one category at a time is displayed in the graphics display;

performing a particular procedure changes the display from one category to another category.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the graphics display includes additional icons external to the matrix, wherein selecting one of the additional icons results in performing an operation that would also be performed by selecting one category and one application from the matrix.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein:

said showing the multiple icons comprises showing at least a portion of the matrix on a first face of a virtual polyhedron; and

rotating the virtual polyhedron displays another face of the polyhedron containing a different portion of the matrix.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said rotating is caused by touching a part of the first face on the touchscreen and dragging across the touchscreen in a particular direction.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the virtual polyhedron is a virtual cube.

13. An article comprising

a computer-readable medium that contains instructions, which when executed by one or more processors result in performing operations comprising:

presenting a graphics display on a touchscreen of a handheld device, the graphics display configured to show multiple icons;

wherein the icons represent at least a portion of a matrix of selections, with categories represented along one axis of the matrix and applications represented along another axis of the matrix;

wherein selection of an icon results in operation of the selected application as applied to the selected category.

14. The article of claim 13, wherein:

only one category at a time is displayed in the graphics display; and

performing a particular procedure changes the display from one category to another category.

15. The article of claim 14, wherein:

the graphics display includes additional icons external to the matrix; and

selection of one of the additional icons results in performing an operation that would also be performed by selecting one category and one application from the matrix.

16. The article of claim 13, wherein:

said showing the multiple icons comprises showing at least a portion of the matrix on a first face of a virtual polyhedron; and

rotating the virtual polyhedron displays another face of the polyhedron containing a different portion of the matrix.

17. The article of claim 16, wherein the operation of rotating is caused by touching a part of the first face on the touchscreen and dragging across the touchscreen in a particular direction.

18. The article of claim 16, wherein the virtual polyhedron is a virtual cube.

19. An apparatus for presenting information, comprising

a handheld electronic device for operation by a user, the electronic device comprising a processor, a memory, a radio, and a touchscreen, wherein the device is to create a cluster of related nodes by performing actions comprising:

identifying a set of desired information;

selecting a set of related nodes that are deemed likely to contribute to producing the set of desired information;

activating the nodes to automatically perform interrelated actions to produce the set of desired information; and

presenting the desired information to the user through visual and/or audible means.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein at least some of the nodes are selected from a list of nodes consisting of:

a software application;

a selection of data;

an internal or external service;

input from a sensor; and

a communications link.

21. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein at least some of the nodes are to be identified by a user of the electronic device.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said determining comprises presenting the nodes on the touchscreen for selection by the user.

23. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein at least some of the nodes are to be identified automatically by the device, using status awareness.

24. A method of operating a handheld electronic device, comprising:

identifying a set of desired information;

creating a cluster of nodes by selecting a set of related nodes that are deemed likely to contribute to producing the set of desired information;

activating the nodes to automatically perform interrelated actions to produce the set of desired information; and

presenting the set of desired information to the user through at least one of visual and audible means.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes from a list of nodes consisting of:

a software application;

a selection of data;

an internal or external service;

input from a sensor; and

a communications link.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes by a user of the electronic device.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes automatically by the device, using status awareness.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein said creating comprises presenting the nodes on the touchscreen.

29. An article comprising

a computer-readable medium that contains instructions, which when executed by one or more processors result in performing operations comprising:

identifying a set of desired information;

creating a cluster of nodes by selecting a set of related nodes that are deemed likely to contribute to producing the set of desired information;

activating the nodes to automatically perform interrelated actions to produce the set of desired information; and

presenting the set of desired information to the user through at least one of visual and/or audible means.

30. The article of claim 29, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes from a list of nodes consisting of:

a software application;

a selection of data;

an internal or external service;

input from a sensor; and

a communications link.

31. The article of claim 29, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes by a user of the electronic device.

32. The article of claim 29, wherein said selecting comprises selecting at least some of the nodes automatically by the device, using status awareness.

33. The article of claim 29, wherein said creating comprises presenting the nodes on a touchscreen for selection by the user.

34. An apparatus for presenting information to a user, comprising

an electronic device for operation by the user, the electronic device comprising a processor, a memory, a radio, a speaker, and a touchscreen, wherein the device is to:

obtain information for presentation to the user;

determine multiple methods of presenting the information to the user;

select at least one of the multiple methods based on status awareness; and

present the information to the user with the selected method.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the selected method includes one or more techniques chosen from a list of techniques consisting of:

1) audio through a speaker;

2) audio through a headset;

3) displayed text;

4) a displayed image of a recorded photograph or video;

5) a displayed image of computer generated graphics; and

6) a display with brightness adjusted for ambient lighting conditions.

36. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein said selection is to be based at least partly on one or more factors chosen from a list of factors consisting of:

1) current user activities;

2) importance of the current user activities;

3) affect of the method of presentation on other people; and

4) effectiveness of each method in the user'"'"'s current environment.

37. A method of presenting information to a user, comprising:

obtaining information for presentation to a user;

determining multiple methods of presenting the information to the user with a handheld electronic device;

selecting at least one of the multiple methods based on status awareness; and

presenting the information to the user with the handheld electronic device, using said at least one method.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the selected method includes one or more techniques chosen from a list of techniques consisting of:

1) audio through a speaker;

2) audio through a headset;

3) displayed text;

4) a displayed image of a recorded photograph or video;

5) a displayed image of computer generated graphics; and

6) a display with brightness adjusted for ambient lighting conditions.

39. The method of claim 37, wherein said selecting is based at least partly on one or more factors chosen from a list of factors consisting of:

1) current user activities;

2) importance of the current user activities;

3) affect of the method of presentation on other people; and

4) effectiveness of each method in the user'"'"'s current environment.

40. An article comprising

a computer-readable medium that contains instructions, which when executed by one or more processors result in performing operations comprising:

obtaining information for presentation to a user;

determining multiple methods of presenting the information to the user with a handheld electronic device;

selecting at least one of the multiple methods based on status awareness; and

presenting the information to the user with the handheld electronic device, using said at least one method.

41. The article of claim 40, wherein the selected method includes one or more techniques chosen from a list of techniques consisting of:

1) audio through a speaker;

2) audio through a headset;

3) displayed text;

4) a displayed image of a recorded photograph or video;

5) a displayed image of computer generated graphics; and

6) a display with brightness adjusted for ambient lighting conditions.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the operation of selecting is based at least partly on one or more factors chosen from a list of factors consisting of:

1) current user activities;

2) importance of the current user activities;

3) affect of the method of presentation on other people; and

4) effectiveness of each method in the user'"'"'s current environment.
