Abstract

An apparatus for insertion of a medical device in the skin of a subject is provided, as well as methods of inserting medical devices.

Claims

1. A medical device inserter, comprising:

a bellows, a sheath, and a removable distal cap defining a sterile environment, with a medical device and an inserter sharp housed therein, wherein the bellows is compressible to advance the medical device through a skin layer of a subject.

2. The inserter of claim 1 further comprising a carriage shaped with a recess, the recess receiving an on body housing for the medical device, wherein the medical device is an analyte sensor.

3. The inserter of claim 1, wherein the cap is threaded to the sheath.

4. The inserter of claim 1, wherein the device is adapted so the bellows alone, provides force for withdrawing the inserter sharp after inserting through the skin layer.

5. The inserter of claim 1, further comprising a coil spring set within the bellows and adapted to provide force for withdrawing the inserter sharp after inserting through the skin layer.

6. The inserter of claim 1, wherein the bellows comprises a series of concentric folds.

7. The inserter of claim 6, wherein the bellows comprises raised portions and folded portions.

8. The inserter of claim 1, wherein a proximal extent of the bellows provides an actuation portion of the inserter.

9. The inserter of claim 8, wherein a distal extent of the sheath provides an interface with the skin layer.
