Abstract

A system, method and apparatus for real time measurement and monitoring of various personal health parameters including controlled delivery of drugs/medications by intelligent pump appliances, intelligent inhalation appliances and intelligent skin patch appliances used in a standalone manner or in a wired or wireless networked configuration, in conjunction with various peripheral devices, other intelligent appliances, servers, RF ID Tags and stationary/mobile devices. The intelligent appliances relate to the measurement, monitoring and delivery of insulin/other drugs for the treatment of diabetes and other diseases. The method also additionally includes the application of intelligent appliances for pain management including visualization of organs and body locations exhibiting pain.

7. An intelligent active skin device comprising:

a substrate, wherein the substrate is configured for attaching to a body of a user;

a reservoir coupled to the substrate and configured to contain at least one composition for use in treating the body;

a delivery system comprising a processor and a skin activation mechanism coupled to the processor, the skin activation mechanism configured to deliver energy to skin of the body to stimulate the skin,

wherein the processor is configured to communicate in real time with a remote device to control at least one release of at least one amount of the composition from the reservoir, and

wherein the processor is further configured to apply the skin activation mechanism based upon an input received from the at least one remote device, wherein the input includes environmental parameters and/or the geographic location of the user.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein configured to deliver energy to the skin includes modulating at least one skin characteristic of a portion of the skin, wherein the modulating provides controlled absorption.

18. The device of claim 7, wherein the substrate is a patch coupled to the reservoir, the patch configured to deliver the composition to the body.

20. The device of claim 7, wherein the substrate includes an adhesive for attaching to the body.

21. The device of claim 7, wherein the substrate includes a strap for attaching to the body.

22. The device of claim 7, wherein the amount of composition and skin activation may be automatically determined by the processor functioning in a standalone manner.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the processor is configured to measure a concentration level of the composition at the substrate.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to maintain a selected concentration level of the composition at the substrate.

25. The device of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to control a rate of the release of the composition according to the selected concentration level.

26. The device of claim 7, wherein the amount of composition is determined by the processor in response to an input from a user.

28. The device of claim 7, wherein the amount of composition is communicated from the remote device in response to an input from a user, wherein the remote device is remote to the delivery system.

29. The device of claim 7, wherein the delivery system is configured to automatically release the composition.

30. The device of claim 7, wherein the delivery system is configured to release the composition under manual control of the user.

31. The device of claim 7, wherein the processor includes a component configured as a controller to generate control signals.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the controller generates the control signals one or more of automatically and in response to an input from a user.

33. The device of claim 31, wherein the control signals control release of the composition.

34. The device of claim 31, wherein the control signals are configured to control one or more of devices coupled to the body, devices implanted in the body, and devices coupled to the processor.

35. The device of claim 7, wherein the reservoir includes a pump.

36. The device of claim 7, comprising a plunger coupled to the processor and the reservoir, wherein the processor controls movement of the plunger.

37. The device of claim 36, wherein the processor automatically controls the plunger to release the composition one or more of based on communication with a remote device and according to an input received from the user at the processor.

38. The device of claim 7, further comprising an analyzer coupled to the processor, the analyzer configured to generate processed information by correlating one or more of biological parameters and health information of the body.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the biological parameters include one or more of current and historical biological information of the user comprising one or more of weight, height, age, body mass index, medical analyses results, blood analyses results, heart activity, heart rate, and blood pressure.

40. The device of claim 38, wherein the health information includes one or more of current and historical health information of the user, wherein the health information includes one or more of dietary data, types of food consumed, amounts of food consumed, medications consumed, times of food consumption, physical activity, exercise regimen, work schedule, activity schedule, and sleep schedule.

41. The device of claim 38, wherein the processed information includes information of the composition, wherein the information of the composition includes one or more of composition identification information, an amount released, and a time of release.

42. The device of claim 38, wherein the composition is administered under control of the processor and the processed information.

43. The device of claim 38, further comprising a port and a sensor coupled to the analyzer, the port configured to receive a specimen from the body.

44. The device of claim 43, wherein the processor is configured to analyze the specimen and include results of the analysis in the processed information.

45. The device of claim 44, wherein analysis of the specimen includes correlating parameters of the specimen with one or more of the biological parameters and the health information.

46. The device of claim 44, wherein the processed information includes a plurality of dosages corresponding to the parameters of the specimen, wherein the composition is released under at least one of the plurality of dosages.

47. The device of claim 44, wherein the analysis includes correlating one or more of the parameters of the specimen, the health information, and the biological parameters with categorical data of the user, wherein the categorical data includes one or more of data of an age category of the user, data of a body type of the user, and parametric data of the user.

48. The device of claim 44, comprising an output device coupled to the processor, the output device including one or more of a display device, an audio device, and an input/output device, wherein the output device is configured to provide one or more of results of the analysis, the biological parameters, and the health information, wherein results of the analysis comprise suggestions regarding one or more of dietary data, types of food to be consumed, amounts of food to be consumed, medications to be consumed, times food is to be consumed, physical activity, exercise regimen, activity schedule, sleep schedule, and changes to the health information to improve health of the user.

The device of claim 48, wherein the output device is a component of a remote device located one or more of on the body, in a home, in an office, and at a medical treatment facility, the remote device including one or more of a processor-based device, mobile device, wireless device, server, personal digital assistant (PDA), cellular telephone, and portable computer (PC).

50. The device of claim 44, comprising a memory device coupled to the processor, wherein the memory device is configured for storing one or more of results of the analysis, the biological parameters, the health information, and the processed information.

51. The device of claim 44, wherein the processor is configured to convert one or more of data of the specimen, results of the analysis, the biological parameters, and the health information from a first form to a second form.

52. The device of claim 43, wherein the port is configured to receive a substrate that includes the specimen.

53. The device of claim 43, wherein the port includes a device configured to automatically take the specimen from the body.

54. The device of claim 43, wherein the specimen comprises a substrate that includes a blood sample, wherein the processed information includes one or more of an insulin level and a glucose level of the blood sample.

55. The device of claim 43, further comprising a communication system including a transmitter and a receiver coupled to the processor, wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit the processed information.

56. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver is configured to receive one or more of the biological parameters and the health information from a remote device, wherein the remote device includes one or more of a processor-based device, mobile device, wireless device, server, personal digital assistant (PDA), cellular telephone, and portable computer (PC).

57. The device of claim 56, wherein the communication system transmits one of more of the processed information, the biological parameters, and the health information to the remote device.

58. The device of claim 57, wherein the processor and the remote device are configured to distribute the analyzing of the specimen and the correlating parameters of the specimen with one or more of the biological parameters and the health information.

59. The device of claim 57, wherein the remote device is configured to control display of one or more of a raw version and a processed version of one or more of the biological parameters, the processed information, and the health information.

60. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver is configured to receive biometric identification information of the user from a remote device, the biometric identification information including one or more of voice signals, photographic data, handwriting data, finger print data, and retinal data.

The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver is configured to communicate with a plurality of health management devices, wherein the biological parameters acquired by the health management devices are communicated to the processor for one or more of the processing and communicating to a remote device.

62. The device of claim 61, comprising controlling the health management devices to acquire in real time at least a portion of the biological parameters.

63. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver is configured to receive control data from the remote device, wherein the control data controls operations of one or more of the analyzer and the delivery system.

64. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver is configured to receive identification information of the user from an identification device, wherein the identification device couples to the receiver via one or more of a wireless and a wired coupling.

65. The device of claim 64, wherein the receiver is configured to receive from the identification device one or more of the health information and the biological parameters.

66. The device of claim 64, wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit to the identification device one or more of the processed information, the biological parameters, and the health information.

67. The device of claim 64, wherein the identification device includes one or more of an optically readable tag, a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, an identification number, a wrist band, a necklace, a badge, a smart card, a wearable device, and a device implanted in the body.

68. The device of claim 55, wherein the transmitter includes one or more of a wireless transmitter and a wired, wherein the transmitter uses one or more channels to transmit.

69. The device of claim 55, wherein the transmitter is configured to communicate with a plurality of health management appliances.

The device of claim 55, wherein the communication system is configured to communicate alert information in response to the processed information, wherein the alert information includes one or more of a message, a visual alert, an audible alert, and a vibratory alert communicated to the user, wherein the alert information includes one or more of voice data, text, graphics data, and multimedia information.

71. The device of claim 70, wherein the alert information includes an electronic signal transmitted to a remote device located one or more of on the body, in a home, in an office, and at a medical treatment facility.

The device of claim 55, wherein the communication system is configured to communicate one or more of the biological parameters and the health information to a remote device located one or more of on the body, in a home, in an office, and at a medical treatment facility, the remote device including one or more of a processor-based device, mobile device, wireless device, server, personal digital assistant (PDA), cellular telephone, and portable computer (PC).

73. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver comprises an audio receiver for receiving data, wherein the data received includes one or more of spoken measurements, at least a portion of the biological parameters, and at least a portion of the health information.

74. The device of claim 55, wherein the receiver comprises a wireless receiver that receives on one or more channels, wherein the receiver is configured to receive the dispense instructions.

75. The device of claim 55, wherein the communication system transfers device identification information to a remote device, wherein the device identification information authenticates the device.

76. The device of claim 7, wherein the composition is delivered as one or more of a liquid, an atomized liquid, and a vapor.

77. The device of claim 7, further comprising at least one auxiliary port for connecting to at least one other device.

78. The device of claim 7, comprising an input/output component coupled to the processor, the input/output component configured to provide communication via a network comprising a wired network and a wireless network.

79. The device of claim 7, comprising a positioning device coupled to the processor, the positioning device automatically determining a location of the body and outputting information of the location.

80. The device of claim 79, wherein the positioning device is a Global Positioning System CGPS) receiver, wherein the location includes one or more of a latitude, a longitude, an altitude, a geographical position relative to a land-based reference.

81. The device of claim 7, wherein the processed information includes one or more administration parameters of the released composition, the administration parameters including composition, quantity, volume, pressure, rate, flow, temperature, and duration of administration.

82. The device of claim 7, comprising a catheter port and a catheter coupled to the port, wherein the catheter is configured to deliver the composition to one or more regions of the body and to the substrate.

83. The device of claim 82, comprising a needle coupled to a distal end of the catheter, the needle configured for insertion into the body.

84. The device of claim 82, wherein the composition is delivered as one or more of a liquid and an atomized liquid.

85. The device of claim 7, comprising a sensor coupled to the processor, the sensor configured to measure an environmental parameter including one or more of temperature and humidity of a local environment including the user, the processor configured to adjust one or more of the composition release and skin activation using the environmental parameter.

The device of claim 7, comprising a sensor coupled to the processor, the sensor configured to measure a skin parameter including one or more of temperature and humidity of a portion of skin of the user, the processor configured to adjust one or more of the composition release and skin activation using the skin parameter.

87. The device of claim 7, wherein one or more of the substrate, the reservoir, and the delivery system are configured to be disposable.

88. The device of claim 7, wherein the substrate is configured to be replaceable, wherein the substrate is replaced following at least one use.

89. The device of claim 7, wherein the substrate is configured to include a first composition and a second composition.

90. The device of claim 89, wherein the delivery system is configured to deliver the first composition and the second composition one or more of simultaneously and sequentially.

91. The device of claim 7, wherein the reservoir is configured to include a first composition and a second composition.

92. The device of claim 91, wherein the delivery system is configured to deliver the first composition and the second composition one or more of simultaneously and sequentially.

93. The device of claim 7, comprising a second substrate coupled to the reservoir, wherein the second substrate is configured to receive a second composition.

94. The device of claim 7, comprising a second substrate coupled to a second reservoir, wherein the second reservoir is configured to contain a second composition.

95. The device of claim 7, comprising a second reservoir coupled to the substrate, wherein the second reservoir is configured to contain a second composition.

96. The device of claim 7, wherein the reservoir is configured to be replaceable.

97. The device of claim 96, comprising a first reservoir including a first composition.

100. An intelligent active skin device comprising:

a substrate, wherein the substrate is configured for attaching to a body of a user;

a reservoir coupled to the substrate and configured to contain at least one composition for use in treating the body;

a delivery system comprising a processor and a skin activation mechanism coupled to the processor, the skin activation mechanism configured to deliver energy to the skin, including modulating at least one skin characteristic of a portion of the skin, wherein the modulating provides controlled absorption,

wherein the processor is configured to wirelessly communicate in real time with at least one remote device to control at least one release of at least one amount of the composition from the reservoir, and

wherein the processor is further configured to apply the skin activation mechanism based upon an input received from the at least one remote processor including environmental parameters and/or geographic location of the user for controlled absorption of the composition through the skin.

101. An intelligent active skin device comprising:

an intelligent blood glucose measurement system;

a substrate, wherein the substrate is configured for attaching to a body of a user;

a reservoir coupled to the substrate and configured to contain at least one composition for use in treating the body;

a delivery system comprising a processor and a skin activation mechanism coupled to the processor, the skin activation mechanism configured to deliver energy to the skin, wherein the processor is configured to wirelessly communicate in real time with at least one remote device to control at least one release of at least one amount of the composition from the reservoir, and

wherein the processor is further configured to apply the skin activation mechanism based upon an input received from the at least one remote device including environmental parameters and/or geographic location of the user for controlled absorption of the composition through the skin.
