Abstract

A system and method of managing read and delivery reports for messages is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for generating a read report using an IMAP includes processing a message received from a first converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) client device, storing the processed message into a message storage server using an internet message access protocol (IMAP) protocol, generating a read report by the second CPM client device in response to displaying the processed message stored in the message storage server, and delivering the read report to the first CPM client device by a CPM participating/controlling function server. The method also includes blocking redundant delivery reports generated upon retrieval of the message.

Claims

1. A method for handling a read confirmation for a message, comprising:

processing a message received from a first converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) client device;

storing the processed message into a message storage server by a CPM participating/controlling function server using an internet message access protocol (IMAP); and

generating a read report by a second CPM client device in response to displaying the processed message.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

delivering the read report to the first CPM client device by the CPM participating/controlling function server.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the message received from the first CPM client device comprises:

receiving a CPM message from the first CPM client device by the CPM participating/controlling function server using an session initiation protocol (SIP);

converting the CPM message into an IMAP message; and

inserting instant messaging delivery notification (IMDN) headers into the IMAP message.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein generating the read report in response to displaying the processed message stored in the message storage server by the second CPM client device comprises:

retrieving the IMAP message from the message storage server using the IMAP;

determining whether a read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false;

when the read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false, generating a read report in response to displaying the IMAP message by the second CPM client device;

updating the read report status flag in the IMDN headers to true; and

substantially simultaneously forwarding the generated read report to the CPM participating/controlling function server using the SIP such that the CPM participating/controlling function server delivers the read report to the first CPM client device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein, generating the read report by the second CPM client device in response to displaying the processed message comprises:

receiving a CPM message from the first CPM client device by the CPM participating/controlling function server using an session initiation protocol (SIP);

receiving the CPM message from the CPM participating/controlling function server by the second CPM client device using the SIP;

generating the read report by the second CPM client device upon receiving the IMAP message; and

updating a read report status flag in the message stored in the message storage server such that duplicate read reports are not generated when the IMAP message is subsequently retrieved by the second CPM client device from the message storage server.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein generating the read report in response to displaying of the processed message stored in the message storage server by the second CPM client device comprises:

retrieving the IMAP message from the message storage server using the IMAP;

determining whether a read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false;

when the read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false, updating the read report status flag in the IMAP message to true by the second CPM client device in response to displaying the IMAP message on the second CPM client device;

transmitting the updated read report status flag to the message storage server;

forwarding the updated read report status flag to the CPM participating/controlling function server by the message storage server; and

generating and transmitting a read report based on the read report status flag by the CPM participating/controlling function server using the SIP.

The method of claim 6, wherein in forwarding the updated read report status flag to the CPM participating/controlling function server by the message storage server, the CPM participating/controlling function server establishes a session with the message storage server using an IMAP idle command.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the processed message is stored in the message storage server using the IMAP based on instructions from the second CPM client device.

9. A method for handling a delivery confirmation for a message, comprising:

processing a message received from a first converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) client device;

storing the processed message in a message storage server by a CPM participating/controlling function server using an internet message access protocol (IMAP);

generating a delivery report by a CPM participating/controlling function server upon storing the processed message; and

blocking one or more subsequent delivery reports generated by one or more CPM client devices upon retrieving the stored message from the message storage server.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

forwarding the generated delivery report to the first CPM client device by the CPM participating/controlling function server.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein processing the message received from the first CPM client device comprises:

receiving a CPM message from the first CPM client device by the CPM participating/controlling function server using an session initiation protocol (SIP);

converting the CPM message into an IMAP message;

inserting instant messaging delivery notification (IMDN) headers into the IMAP message; and

updating a delivery report status flag in the IMDN headers as true.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein blocking one or more subsequent delivery reports upon retrieving the stored message from the message storage server comprises:

retrieving the delivery report status flag from the IMDN headers of the retrieved IMAP message;

determining whether the delivery report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to hue;

blocking generation of a delivery report based on the delivery report status flag.

13. A system for handling read confirmation for a message, comprising:

a converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) participating/controlling function server configured to process a message received from at least one originating CPM client device;

a message storage server configured to store the processed message using an internet message access protocol (IMAP) protocol; and

at least one terminating CPM client device configured to generate a read report in response to displaying the processed message stored in the message storage server.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to deliver the read report to the at least one originating CPM client device.

The system of claim 13, wherein in processing the message, the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to receive a CPM message from the at least one originating CPM client device using an session initiation protocol (SIP), convert the CPM message into an IMAP message, and insert instant messaging delivery notification (IMDN) headers into the IMAP message.

The method of claim 15, wherein in generating the read report in response to displaying the processed message, the at least one terminating CPM client device is further configured to retrieve the IMAP message from the message storage server using the IMAP, determine whether a read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false, generate a read report in response to displaying the IMAP message based on the determination, update the read report status flag in the IMDN headers to true, and forward the generated read report to the CPM participating/controlling function server using the SIP such that the CPM participating/controlling function server delivers the read report to the originating CPM client device.

17. A system for handling a read confirmation for a message, comprising:

a converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) participating/controlling function server configured to process a message received from at least one originating CPM client device;

a message storage server configured to store the processed message using an internet message access protocol (IMAP) protocol; and

at least one terminating CPM client device configured to update a read report status flag to the message storage server for generation of a read report by the CPM participating/controlling function server.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to deliver the generated read report to the at least one originating CPM client device.

The system of claim 17, wherein in processing the received message, the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to receive a CPM message from the at least one originating CPM client device using an session initiation protocol (SIP), convert the CPM message into an IMAP message, and remove instant messaging delivery notification (IMDN) headers from the IMAP message.

The system of claim 19, wherein in generating the read report, the terminating CPM client device is further configured to retrieve the IMAP message from the message storage server using the IMAP, determine whether a read report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to false, update the read report status flag in the IMAP message to true in response to displaying the IMAP message on the at least one terminating CPM client device, and transmit the updated read report status flag to the message storage server.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein in generating the read report, the message storage server is further configured to forward the updated read report status flag to the CPM participating/controlling function server.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein in generating the read report, the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to generate and transmit a read report based on the read report status flag using the SIP.

23. A system for handling delivery confirmation for a message comprising:

a converged internet protocol messaging (CPM) participating/controlling function server configured to;

process a message received from at least one originating CPM client device;

store the processed message into a message storage server using an internet message access protocol (IMAP) protocol; and

generate a delivery report upon storing the processed message; and

at least one terminating CPM client device configured to block subsequent delivery reports generated upon retrieval of the stored message from the message storage server.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to forward the generated delivery report to the at least one originating CPM client device.

The system of claim 23, wherein in processing the message, the CPM participating/controlling function server is further configured to receive a CPM message from the at least one originating CPM client device using an session initiation protocol (SIP), convert the CPM message into an IMAP message, insert instant messaging delivery notification (IMDN) headers into the IMAP message, and update a delivery report status flag in the IMDN headers as true.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein in blocking the subsequent delivery report, the at least one terminating client device is further configured to retrieve the delivery report status flag from the IMDN headers of the retrieved IMAP message, determine whether the delivery report status flag in the IMDN headers is set to true, and block generation of a subsequent delivery report based on the delivery report status flag.
