Abstract

An integrated circuit is described for providing a power supply to a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA). The integrated circuit includes a low-frequency power supply path including a switching regulator and a high-frequency power supply path arranged to regulate an output voltage of a combined power supply at an output port of the integrated circuit for coupling to a load. The combined power supply is provided by the low-frequency power supply path and high-frequency power supply path. The high-frequency power supply path includes: an amplifier including a voltage feedback and arranged to drive a power supply signal on the high-frequency power supply path; and a capacitor operably coupled to the output of the amplifier and arranged to perform dc level shifting of the power supply signal.

Claims

1. An integrated circuit for providing a power supply to a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA), the integrated circuit comprising:

a low-frequency power supply path comprising a switching regulator; and

a high-frequency power supply path arranged to regulate an output voltage of a combined power supply at an output port of the integrated circuit for coupling to a load wherein the combined power supply is provided by the low-frequency power supply path and high-frequency power supply path;

wherein the high-frequency power supply path comprises;

an amplifier comprising a voltage feedback and arranged to drive a power supply signal on the high-frequency power supply path; and

a capacitor operably coupled to the output of the amplifier and arranged to perform dc voltage level shifting of the power supply signal.

2. The integrated circuit of claim 1 wherein the amplifier is a linear amplifier comprising a first input for receiving the voltage feedback and a second input arranged to receive a modulated envelope input signal.

3. The integrated circuit of claim 2 wherein the voltage feedback from the output port regulates the supply voltage provided to the output port according to the modulated envelope input signal.

The integrated circuit of claim 2 further comprising a processor operably coupled to the linear amplifier and arranged to receive the modulated envelope input signal and clip or remove at least one signal trough in the modulated envelope input signal and provide the clipped or trough removed at least one modulated envelope input signal to the linear amplifier.

5. The integrated circuit of claim 1 wherein the switching regulator of the low-frequency power supply path controls the average output voltage of the amplifier by use of a capacitor acting as an integrator.

6. The integrated circuit of claim 1 wherein the power supply is a hybrid/composite wideband power supply comprising a switch mode power supply.

7. The integrated circuit of claim 1 further comprising a mode control module arranged to select between at least an envelope tracking mode of operation and a fixed drain mode of operation of the amplifier.

8. The integrated circuit of claim 7 further comprising at least one switch operably coupled to the mode control module for effecting a mode transition between the envelope tracking mode of operation and the fixed drain mode of operation of the amplifier.

9. The integrated circuit of claim 7 wherein the mode control module is arranged to select between the envelope tracking mode of operation and the fixed drain mode of operation of the amplifier based on at least one from a group consisting of:

an output power level of the power amplifier, use of a modulation scheme that has a low crest factor.

10. The integrated circuit of claim 7 wherein the second input of the amplifier is arranged to receive a ramped and tapered modulated envelope input signal during a transition between the envelope tracking mode of operation and the fixed drain mode of operation.

11. The integrated circuit of claim 7 wherein the amplifier comprises at least an n-channel transistor and a p-channel transistor, wherein, when operating in fixed drain mode at least one of the following configurations is performed:

the n-channel transistor is switched on and the p-channel transistor is switched off such that the amplifier operates as a switch;

or

the p-channel transistor is switched to a dc voltage.

The integrated circuit of claim 8 wherein the at least one switch is further operably coupled to an inductance that in combination with the capacitor is arranged to act as a filter applied to the power supply in the fixed drain mode of operation when the at least one switch is connected to a fixed voltage.

13. The integrated circuit of claim 12 further comprising at least one from a group of:

a first current sense operably coupled to the inductance to monitor an instantaneous current passing therethrough and a second current sense operably coupled to an output of the amplifier and arranged to provide an indication of a load current.

The integrated circuit of claim 13 wherein in the envelope tracking mode of operation a feedback signal for the low-frequency power supply path takes as its input the output of the linear amplifier compared to a target DC voltage in order to determine the level shift voltage across the capacitor.

15. The integrated circuit of claim 12 wherein a pole of the filter is located in a low energy range of a power spectral density of the reference signal.

16. The integrated circuit of claim 1 further comprising a proportional integral controller operably coupled to and independent from the low-frequency power supply path and arranged to sense an output voltage and/or output current at an output of the amplifier.

17. The integrated circuit of claim 16 wherein the low-frequency power supply path comprises a pulse-width modulator arranged to respond to a control signal from the proportional integral controller to produce a low frequency output current.

18. The integrated circuit of claim 2 further comprising an envelope conditioning module operably coupled to the second input to the amplifier and arranged to modify at least one envelope signal characteristic.

19. The integrated circuit of claim 18 wherein the envelope conditioning module is arranged to modify at least one envelope signal characteristic according to at least one from a group of:

set a minimum limit of the power supply to meet requirements of the power amplifier;

restrict a signal bandwidth of the at least one envelope signal,

perform a gain and/or offset alignment of the at least one envelope signal; and

implement signal formatting of the at least one envelope signal, such as converting between differential and single ended representation.

20. A wireless communication unit comprising a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA) and a power supply for providing a power supply to the RF PA, the wireless communication unit comprising:

a low-frequency power supply path comprising a switching regulator; and

a high-frequency power supply path arranged to regulate an output voltage of a combined power supply at an output port of the integrated circuit for coupling to a load wherein the combined power supply is provided by the low-frequency power supply path and high-frequency power supply path;

wherein the high-frequency power supply path comprises;

an amplifier comprising a voltage feedback and arranged to drive a power supply signal on the high-frequency power supply path; and

a capacitor operably coupled to the output of the amplifier and arranged to perform dc voltage level shifting of the power supply signal.

21. A method for providing a power supply to a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA), the method comprising:

providing a low-frequency power supply to a RF PA using a switching regulator;

providing a high-frequency power supply to the RF PA via a high-frequency power supply path;

driving a power supply for the RF PA from an amplifier that uses voltage-feedback on the high-frequency power supply path; and

performing dc voltage level shifting of the power supply signal on the high-frequency power supply path.
