Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide for methods and apparatus for fragmenting a single message and sending the message fragments over multiple independent networks to a single receiving unit. The receiving unit then reassembles the message fragments to generate the original message. One embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention is a wireless radio frequency modem that can both receive and transmit fragmented messages over multiple independent networks.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting a message to a single receiving unit over a combination of networks, comprising:

selecting the combination of networks from a plurality of available independent networks for transmitting message fragments of the message to be transmitted to a receiving unit;

splitting the message, via a message splitting controller, into a plurality of the message fragments according to at least one predetermined criteria; and

transmitting each of the message fragments or a subset of each of the message fragments to the receiving unit separately via one of each network of the combination of networks.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the message splitting controller comprises one of a mobile switching center, a network controller, a transmitter controller, and an Internet server,

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the Internet server comprises a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the Internet server comprises an HTTP range server.

The method of claim 1, wherein the combination of networks includes at least two networks selected from the group comprising a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) network, a 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (1xEVDO) network, a Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledgement (DORA) network, a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network, and a High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the message fragments comprises a portion of an HTTP file.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein each of the portions of the HTTP file comprises a predefined range of bytes within the HTTP file.

The method of claim 1, further comprising selecting the combination of networks from the plurality of available independent networks for transmitting, in addition to the message fragments of the message to be transmitted to the receiving unit, at least one of an independent file and an independent message to be transmitted to the receiving unit.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising transmitting each of the at least one of the independent file, the independent message, and each of the message fragments to the receiving unit on separate ones of the combination of networks.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein prior to the transmitting, each of the message fragments are numbered to facilitate reassembly of the message at the receiving unit in accordance with a numbering rule.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the message fragments is transparently numbered using Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a desired data throughput associated with the transmitting of the message, wherein the splitting of the message is proportional to a data transfer rate of each network of the combination of networks such that an aggregate of the data transfer rate of each network equals the desired data throughput.

13. An Internet server for uplink transmission of a message, comprising:

a controller configured to;

select a combination of networks from a plurality of available independent networks for transmitting message fragments of a message to be transmitted to a single receiving unit; and

split the message into a plurality of the message fragments according to at least one predetermined criteria; and

a transmitter configured to;

transmit each of the message fragments or a subset of each of the message fragments to the receiving unit separately via one of each network of the combination of networks.

The Internet server of claim 13, wherein the combination of networks includes at least two networks selected from the group comprising a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) network, a 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (1xEVDO) network, a Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledgement (DORA) network, a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network, and a High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network.

15. The Internet server of claim 13, wherein the Internet server comprises one of a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server and an HTTP range server.

16. The Internet server of claim 15, wherein each of the message fragments comprises a portion of an HTTP file.

17. The Internet server of claim 16, wherein each of the portions of the HTTP file comprises a predefined range of bytes within the HTTP file.

18. A device for downlink receiving of a message, comprising:

a radio frequency (RF) front-end component configured to receive a plurality of message fragments, wherein one of each of the plurality of message fragments or each of a subset of the plurality of message fragments is received via a separate network; and

a fragment combiner configured to reassemble the plurality of message fragments in accordance with a predefined numbering rule to generate the message.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the plurality of message fragments are received, via each separate network, from an Internet server comprising one of a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server and an HTTP range server.

The device of claim 18, wherein each separate network is selected from a group of independent networks comprising a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) network, a 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (1xEVDO) network, a Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledgement (DORA) network, a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network, and a High Speed Packet.
