1. A method for transmitting a message to a single receiving unit over a combination of networks, comprising:
- selecting the combination of networks from a plurality of available independent networks for transmitting message fragments of the message to be transmitted to a receiving unit;
splitting the message, via a message splitting controller, into a plurality of the message fragments according to at least one predetermined criteria; and
transmitting each of the message fragments or a subset of each of the message fragments to the receiving unit separately via one of each network of the combination of networks.

Abstract
Embodiments of the invention provide for methods and apparatus for fragmenting a single message and sending the message fragments over multiple independent networks to a single receiving unit. The receiving unit then reassembles the message fragments to generate the original message. One embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention is a wireless radio frequency modem that can both receive and transmit fragmented messages over multiple independent networks.
