Abstract

An approach for normalizing automated demand response events in energy management and control systems. The normalizing may be of events having disparate communication protocols and data formats. There may be a processing engine for each unique protocol or data format. When event data are received, they may be normalized into a standard format which can be utilized by an energy management and control system to initiate a pre-programmed demand response strategy. In other words, using an auto demand response service with its normalized event information, standard response strategies may be developed. The auto demand response service and standard strategies may then be deployed across an entire multi-site enterprise regardless of the auto demand response service provider servicing a particular site. There appears no need to modify the demand response strategy because the auto demand response service may handle a transformation of the auto demand response system'"'"'s event data.

Claims

1. A system for normalizing automated demand response events in energy management and control systems, comprising:

an energy entity initiating a demand response event;

an automated demand response system receiving the demand response event from the energy entity; and

an energy management and control system retrieving the demand response event from the automated demand response system; and

wherein the energy management and control system processes and/or normalizes the demand response event and provides event feedback to the automated demand response system.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the energy management control system comprises:

an automated demand response service; and

a device control and demand response strategies module connected to the automated demand response service.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the automated demand response service comprises:

a protocol configuration check mechanism; and

one or more processing engines; and

wherein an appropriate processing engine of the one or processing engines is invoked according to a protocol of the demand response system, as determined by the protocol configuration check mechanism.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the appropriate processing engine decodes the demand response event, normalizes the event and updates event information.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein:

the appropriate processing engine provides event information to the device control and demand response strategies module; and

a variation, such as an update, of the event information can trigger the device control and demand response strategies module to execute a demand response strategy; and

the event feedback comprises updated event information, performance metrics, one or more demand response strategies.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the appropriate processing engine encodes the event feedback from the device control and demand response strategies module into the protocol configuration of the demand response system as determined by the protocol configuration check mechanism.

7. An automated demand response architecture comprising:

an energy operator having an information system;

an automated demand response system connected to the information system; and

a participant site connected to the automated demand response system.

8. The architecture of claim 7, wherein the participant site comprises an energy management and control system, and an automated demand response service module.

9. The architecture of claim 8, wherein the energy management and control system comprises:

the automated demand response service module;

device control and demand response strategies module connected to the automated demand response service module;

an alarm management module connected to the automated demand response service module and the device control and demand response strategies module;

a history management module connected to the automated demand response service module and the device control and demand response strategies module; and

a site data model connected to the alarm management module and to the history management module.

10. The architecture of claim 9, wherein the energy management and control system further comprises a web server connected to the automated demand response service module, the device control and demand response strategies module, the alarm management module and/or the history management module.

11. The architecture of claim 10, wherein:

a connection between the automated demand response service module and the alarm management module comprises alarm information; and

a connection between the automated demand response service module and the device control and demand response strategies module comprises load shed signals and automated demand response feedback.

12. The architecture of claim 10, wherein a connection between the automated demand response service module and the history management module comprises interval and change-of-value logs.

13. The architecture of claim 10, wherein a connection between the automated demand response service module and the web server comprises automated demand response data.

14. The architecture of claim 9, wherein the automated demand response service retrieves an automated demand response event from an automated demand response system, checks a protocol type of the automated demand response system, selects an engine from one or more engines compatible for receiving and decoding the automated demand response event having the same protocol type, and/or outputs current event information to the device control and demand response strategies module.

15. The architecture of claim 14, wherein the automated demand response service receives an automated demand response event feedback from the device control and demand response strategies module, checks a protocol type of the automated demand response system, selects an engine from one or more engines compatible for encoding, and/or transmits the automated demand response event feedback to the automated demand response system.

16. A structure for normalizing automated demand response events in energy management and control systems, comprising:

a utility;

an automated demand response system connected to the utility; and

an energy management and control system connected to the automated demand response system.

17. The structure of claim 16, wherein the energy management and control system comprises:

an automated demand response service module connected to the automated demand response system; and

a device control and demand response strategies module connected to the automated demand response service module.

18. The structure of claim 17, wherein the automated demand response service module comprises:

one or more processing engines;

a current event information module connected to the one or more processing engines; and

an event feedback module connected to the one or more processing engines.

19. The structure of claim 18, wherein

the current event information module detects changes in current event information which triggers a demand and response strategy from the device control and demand response strategies module;

and

the device control and demand response strategies module provides updates to the event feedback module.

20. The structure of claim 18, wherein a processing engine comprises:

a communication receiver/transmitter connected to the automated demand response system;

a protocol decode logic connected to the communication receiver/transmitter and to the current event information module; and

a protocol encode logic connected to the communication receiver/transmitter and to the event feedback module.
