Abstract

A method for restricting a payment from an account based on a user location includes receiving at least one payment location restriction for an account from a user device over a network. The at least one payment location restriction includes at least one authorized user location or at least one unauthorized user location for making payments using the account.

The at least one payment location restriction is associated with the account in a database. A request to make a payment using the account is received over the network. A current user location is determined. The request to make the payment is then authorized or denied based, at least partly, on whether the current user location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

Claims

1. A method for restricting a payment from an account based on a mobile payer device location, comprising:

receiving at least one payment location restriction for an account from an account holder over a network, wherein the at least one payment location restriction includes at least one authorized user location or at least one unauthorized user location for making payments using the account;

associating the at least one payment location restriction with the account in a database;

receiving a request to make a payment from a payer to a payee using the account, wherein the request is received from a mobile payer device over the network;

receiving a current mobile payer device location over the network from a location determination device in the mobile payer device; and

authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the current mobile payer device location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving at least one time detail for the at least one payment location restriction from the account holder over the network, wherein the at least one time detail includes at least one active time period for applying the at least one payment location restriction;

associating the at least one time detail with the at least one payment location restriction in the database; and

in response to receiving the request to make the payment using the account, determining a current time, wherein in response to the current time being included in the at least one active time period, authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the current mobile payer device location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving at least one rule for the at least one payment location restriction from the account holder over the network, wherein the at least one rule is applied to the at least one payment location restriction in order to authorize or deny the request to make the payment using the account;

associating the at least one rule with the at least one payment location restriction in the database; and

in response to receiving the request to make the payment using the account, authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the at least one rule is satisfied.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the at least one rule includes receiving an approval from an account holder device over the network.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the at least one rule includes determining that an amount of the payment is below a predetermined amount.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the at least one rule includes determining whether a time period that has elapsed since the last use of the account in the at least one restricted area exceeds a predetermined time period.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving the current mobile payer device location includes receiving location coordinates from the location determination device in the mobile payer device.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the location coordinates include Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.

9. A non-transitory machine-readable medium comprising a plurality of machine-readable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, are adapted to cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

receiving at least one payment location restriction for an account from an account holder over a network, wherein the at least one payment location restriction includes at least one authorized user location or at least one unauthorized user location for making payments using the account;

associating the at least one payment location restriction with the account in a database;

receiving a request to make a payment from a payer to a payee using the account, wherein the request is received from a mobile payer device over the network;

receiving a current mobile payer device location over the network from a location determination device in the mobile payer device; and

authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the current mobile payer device location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving at least one time detail for the at least one payment location restriction from the account holder over the network, wherein the at least one time detail includes at least one active time period for applying the at least one payment location restriction;

associating the at least one time detail with the at least one payment location restriction in the database; and

in response to receiving the request to make the payment using the account, determining a current time, wherein in response to the current time being included in the at least one active time period, authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the current mobile payer device location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving at least one rule for the at least one payment location restriction from the account holder over the network, wherein the at least one rule is applied to the at least one payment location restriction in order to authorize or deny the request to make the payment using the account;

associating the at least one rule with the at least one payment location restriction in the database; and

in response to receiving the request to make the payment using the account, authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the at least one rule is satisfied.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the at least one rule includes receiving an approval from an account holder device over the network.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the at least one rule includes determining that an amount of the payment is below a predetermined amount.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the at least one rule including determining whether a time period that has elapsed since the last use of the account in the at least one restricted area exceeds a predetermined time period.

15. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the receiving the current mobile payer device location includes receiving location coordinates from the location determination device in the mobile payer device.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the location coordinates include Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.

17. A payment system based on a user location, comprising:

means for receiving at least one payment location restriction for an account, wherein the at least one payment location restriction includes at least one authorized user location or at least one unauthorized user location for making payments using the account;

means for associating the at least one payment location restriction with the account;

means for receiving a request to make a payment from a payer to a payee using the account, wherein the request is received from a means for making mobile payments by a payer;

receiving a current payer location over the network from a means for determination a location that is located in the means for making mobile payments by the payer; and

means for authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the current payer location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

means for receiving at least one time detail for the at least one payment location restriction, wherein the at least one time detail includes at least one active time period for applying the at least one payment location restriction;

means for associating the at least one time detail with the at least one payment location restriction; and

means for determining a current time in response to receiving the request to make the payment using the account, wherein in response to the current time being included in the at least one active time period, the means for authorizing or denying the request authorizes or denies the request based, at least partly, on whether the current payer location is included in the at least one authorized user location or the at least one unauthorized user location.

19. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

means for receiving at least one rule for the at least one payment location restriction, wherein the at least one rule is applied to the at least one payment location restriction in order to authorize or deny the request to make the payment using the account;

means for associating the at least one rule with the at least one payment location restriction; and

means for authorizing or denying the request based, at least partly, on whether the at least one rule is satisfied.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the means for receiving the current payer location includes means for receiving location coordinates from the means for determination a location that is located in the means for making mobile payments by the payer.
