Abstract

Some embodiments provide a method for editing a composite presentation in a media-editing application. The method receives a media file to import into the media-editing application from an external device. The method creates a set of media clip data structures to represent the media file. At least one of the data structures references the media file on the external device. Before the media file is imported from the external device, the method uses the media clip data structure to edit a composite presentation with the media file. After the media file is imported from the external device, automatically modifying the data structure to refer to a copy of the media file on a local device.

Claims

1. A method for editing a composite presentation in a media-editing application, the method comprising:

receiving a media file to import into the media-editing application from an external device;

creating a set of media clip data structures to represent the media file, at least one of the data structures referencing the media file on the external device;

before the media file is imported from the external device, using the media clip data structure to edit a composite presentation with the media file; and

after the media file is imported from the external device, automatically modifying the data structure to refer to a copy of the media file on a local device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the external device is a camera.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the external device is an external hard disk.

The method of claim 1, wherein the set of media clip data structures comprises an asset data structure that (i) initially comprises a reference to the media file on the external device and (ii) has the reference to the media file on the external device replaced with a reference to the copy of the media file on the local device after the media file is imported.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the set of media clip data structures further comprises a clip data structure that refers to the asset and is independent of the location of the media file.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein using the media clip data structure to edit the composite presentation comprises:

receiving user input to add the media file to a composite presentation;

duplicating the clip data structure within a data structure for the composite presentation, the duplicate clip data structure also referencing the asset independent of the location of the media file.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating thumbnail images for display in a graphical user interface of the media-editing application from the media file stored on the external device before the media file is imported.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising copying the media file from the external device to the local device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the copied media file is stored in a particular folder associated with the media-editing application on the local device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the local device is a boot disk of a computer on which the media-editing application operates.

11. A computer readable medium storing a media-editing application which when executed by at least one processor archives a set of media files, the media-editing application comprising sets of instructions for:

identifying a set of media files stored on a camera connected to the device on which the media-editing application operates; and

storing an archive of the set of media files in a bundle on a storage device, the archive for later import into the media-editing application.

12. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the bundle is represented to a user as a single archive file but actually stores information about each media file in the set.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein each media file in the set includes a unique identifier specified by the camera.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13, wherein the unique identifier for a particular media file is a hash of a camera identifier, a time the particular media file was captured, and a duration of the video.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the bundle is stored on an internal hard drive of the device on which the media-editing application operates.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the bundle is stored on an external hard drive connected to the device on which the media-editing application operates.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the media-editing application further comprises sets of instructions for:

importing the media files in the set from the bundle after the media files have been deleted from the camera; and

using the media files to create a composite presentation.

18. A computer readable medium storing a media-editing application for execution by at least one processor, the media-editing application comprising sets of instructions for:

for each of a plurality of media files imported into the media-editing application, creating a media clip that references the media file stored in the storage;

identifying that a particular media clip in a composite presentation references a file that is missing from the storage;

using a unique identifier stored in the media clip to identify a different copy of the media file; and

modifying the particular media clip to refer to the different copy of the media file.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the particular media clip is a clip data structure that references a particular asset data structure, the asset data structure storing a reference to the missing file.

The computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein the set of instructions for identifying that the particular media clip references a missing file comprises a set of instructions for identifying that the particular asset data structure stores a reference to the missing file, wherein the set of instructions for using the unique identifier comprises a set of instructions for identifying a different asset that stores a reference to the different copy of the media file, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the particular media clip comprises a set of instructions for modifying the reference to the particular asset to refer to the different asset.

The computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein the set of instructions for identifying that the particular media clip references a missing file comprises a set of instructions for identifying that the particular asset data structure is missing, wherein the set of instructions for using the unique identifier comprises a set of instructions for identifying a different asset that stores a reference to the different copy of the media file, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the particular media clip comprises a set of instructions for modifying the reference to the particular asset to refer to the different asset.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein the particular asset data structure is part of a particular event data structure that stores a plurality of asset data structures.

The computer readable medium of claim 22, wherein the set of instructions for identifying that the particular media clip references a missing file comprises a set of instructions for identifying that the particular event data structure is missing, wherein the set of instructions for using the unique identifier comprises a set of instructions for identifying a different asset that stores a reference to the different copy of the media file within a different event data structure, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the particular media clip comprises a set of instructions for modifying the reference to the particular asset to refer to the different asset in the different event data structure.

The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein the particular media clip is part of a particular composite media project that stores a modifiable prioritized list of events including the particular event, wherein the set of instructions for identifying the different asset comprises a set of instructions for searching for an asset with a similar identifier in the events in the prioritized list.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the particular media clip is part of a composite media project that comprises a set of media properties set by a user when the composite media project is created.
