Abstract

Techniques in a mobile communication device for communicating with a wireless access point (AP) are described. The mobile device receives from the AP data which indicate a plurality of activated service intervals in the superframe that are made available to mobile devices for communication access. The mobile device attempts to access, during the indicated activated service intervals, a radio medium via the AP. The mobile device refrains from attempting to access the radio medium via the AP during each power conservation interval provided in between the indicated activated service intervals.

Claims

1. A method in a mobile communication device for communicating with a wireless access point, the method comprising:

receiving, from the wireless access point, data which indicate a plurality of activated service intervals in a superframe that are made available to mobile devices for communication access;

attempting to access, during said indicated activated service intervals, a radio medium via the wireless access point; and

refraining from attempting to access the radio medium via the wireless access point during each power conservation interval in the superframe in between the indicated activated service intervals.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the activated service intervals in the superframe are made available to mobile devices for contention-based communication access.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the number of activated service intervals change in response to a change in a traffic requirement for communication devices operating via the wireless access point.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the number of activated service intervals has a relationship with the traffic requirement such that as the traffic requirement increases, the number of activated service intervals increase.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

attempting to access, during at least one active subinterval of said indicated activated service intervals, the radio medium via the wireless access point; and

refraining from attempting to access the radio medium via the wireless access point during at least one inactive subinterval of said indicated activated service interfaces and during each power conservation interval provided in between the indicated activated service intervals.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of receiving comprises the further act of receiving broadcasted identifiers of the activated service intervals that are available to the communication devices.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of receiving comprises the further act of receiving broadcasted data indicative of boundaries or durations of the activated service intervals that are available to the communication devices for the communication access.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein the contention-based communication access is based on Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA).

10. The method of claim 2, wherein the contention-based communication access is based on Hybrid Coordinator Function (HCF) Controlled Channel Access (HCCA).

11. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

sending to the wireless access point a traffic specification (TSPEC), for indicating changes in the traffic requirement.

12. The method of claim 1, which is performed by computer instructions stored in a non-transitory computer readable medium and executable on one or more processors of the mobile communication device.

13. A mobile communication device, comprising:

one or more processors;

a wireless transceiver coupled to the one or more processors;

the one or more processors being configured to;

receive, from a wireless access point, data which indicate a plurality of activated service intervals of a superframe that are made available to mobile devices for communication access;

attempt to access, during said indicated activated service intervals, a radio medium via the wireless access point; and

refrain from attempting to access the radio medium via the wireless access point during each power conservation interval in the superframe in between the indicated activated service intervals.

14. The mobile communication device of claim 13, wherein the activated service intervals in the superframe are made available to mobile, devices for contention-based communication access.

15. The mobile communication device of claim 13, wherein the activated service intervals comprise dynamically-activated service intervals.

16. The mobile communication device of claim 13, wherein the number of activated service intervals change in response to a change in a traffic requirement for communication devices operating via the wireless access point.

17. The mobile communication device of claim 16, wherein the number of activated service intervals has a relationship with the traffic requirement such that as the traffic requirement increases, the number of activated service intervals increase.

18. The mobile communication device of claim 13, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

attempt to access, during at least one active subinterval of said indicated activated service intervals, the radio medium via the wireless access point; and

refrain from attempting to access the radio medium via the wireless access point during at least one inactive subinterval of said indicated activated service interfaces and during each power conservation interval provided in between the indicated activated service intervals.

19. The mobile communication device of claim 13, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive by receiving broadcasted identifiers of the activated service intervals that are available to the communication devices for the communication access.

20. The mobile communication device of claim 17, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

send to the wireless access point a traffic specification (TSPEC), for indicating changes in the traffic requirement.
