1. A composition for use in detecting an analyte in a sample by colorimetric optical readout, comprising:

  • (a) a polymer having pores specifically imprinted to provide for capture of an analyte in said pores;

    (b) nanoparticles layered on said polymer; and

    (c) photochromic optical switch molecules coated on said nanoparticles,wherein capture of the analyte in the pores of the polymer results in a change in the spatial relation of the nanoparticles layered on the polymer, said change in spatial relation of the nanoparticles causing the photochromic optical switch molecules coated thereon to undergo a change in energy state which corresponds to a visible change in optical spectra of said photochromic optical switch molecules, thereby providing detection of the analyte by colorimetric optical readout.
