Abstract

Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata or index databases. In one exemplary method, a notification that an existing file has been modified or that a new file has been created is received by an indexing software component, which then, in response to the notification performs an indexing operation, where the notification is either not based solely on time or user input or the notification includes an identifier that identifies the file. Other methods in data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

Claims

1. A machine implemented method of processing data, the method comprising:

monitoring a user'"'"'s current use of resources of a data processing system;

determining whether the user'"'"'s current use exceeds a predetermined threshold level of use, wherein the predetermined threshold level of use is greater than no use of the data processing system resources; and

adjusting automatically, in response to the determining, a rate of processing of indexing operations on the data processing system.

2. A method as in claim 1 wherein the indexing operations are performed automatically by the data processing system in response to notifications, from an operating system component, to an indexing component that a file needs to be indexed or re-indexed.

3. A method as in claim 1 wherein as the user'"'"'s current use of the data processing system resources increases, fewer indexing operations are performed over a period of time.

4. A method as in claim 1 wherein the user'"'"'s current use exceeds the predetermined threshold level of use when an application program is using all available display area on a display device of the data processing system.

5. A method as in claim 1 wherein the adjusting comprises changing a processing priority of indexing software relative to other software on a data processing system.

6. A machine readable medium providing instructions which when executed by a data processing system cause the data processing system to perform a method of processing data, the method comprising:

monitoring a user'"'"'s current use of resources of a data processing system;

determining whether the user'"'"'s current use exceeds a predetermined threshold level of use; and

adjusting automatically, in response to the determining, a rate of processing of indexing operations on the data processing system.

7. A medium as in claim 6 wherein the indexing operations are performed automatically by the data processing system is response to notifications, from an operating system component, to an indexing component that a file needs to be indexed or re-indexed.

8. A medium as in claim 6 wherein as the user'"'"'s current use of the data processing system resources increases, fewer indexing operations are performed over a period of time.

9. A medium as in claim 6 wherein the user'"'"'s current use exceeds the predetermined threshold level of use when an application program is using all available display area on a display device of the data processing system.

10. A medium as in claim 6 wherein the adjusting comprises changing a processing priority of indexing software relative to other software on a data processing system.

11. A data processing system comprising:

means for monitoring a user'"'"'s current use of resources of a data processing system;

means for determining whether the user'"'"'s current use exceeds a predetermined threshold level of use, wherein the predetermined threshold level of use is greater than no use of the data processing system resources; and

means for adjusting automatically, in response to the determining, a rate of processing of indexing operations on the data processing system.

12. A system as in claim 11 wherein the indexing operations are performed automatically by the data processing system in response to notifications, from an operating system component, to an indexing component that a file needs to be indexed or re-indexed.

13. A system as in claim 11 wherein as the user'"'"'s current use of the data processing system resources increases, fewer indexing operations are performed over a period of time.

14. A system as in claim 11 wherein the user'"'"'s current use exceeds the predetermined threshold level of use when an application program is using all available display area on a display device of the data processing system.

15. A system as in claim 11 wherein the adjusting comprises changing a processing priority of indexing software relative to other software on a data processing system.

16. A machine readable medium providing instructions which when executed by a data processing system cause the data processing system to perform a method of processing data, the method comprising:

monitoring a user'"'"'s current use of resources of a data processing system;

determining whether the user'"'"'s current use exceeds a predetermined threshold level of use, wherein the predetermined threshold level of use is greater than no use of the data processing system resources; and

adjusting automatically, in response to the determining, a rate of metadata processing operations on the data processing system.

17. A medium as in claim 16 wherein the processing operations are performed automatically by the data processing system is response to notifications, from an operating system component, to a metadata software component that a file needs to have its metadata added to a metadata database.

18. A medium as in claim 16 wherein as the user'"'"'s current use of the data processing system resources increases, fewer metadata processing operations are performed over a period of time.

19. A medium as in claim 16 wherein the user'"'"'s current use exceeds the predetermined threshold level of use when an application program is using all available display area on a display device of the data processing system.

20. A medium as in claim 16 wherein the adjusting comprises changing a processing priority of metadata processing software relative to other software on a data processing system.
