Abstract

Health-sensing and health-action devices and systems are generally described. The health-sensing device may include one or more of a sensor, a filter, and a transmitter. The sensor may be configured to sense one or more factors relating to an indicator of a health related condition or occurrence such as snoring and may include one or more microphone devices, accelerometers, and/or MEMs devices. The filter may be configured to evaluate a signal from the sensor and determine if the indicator has been detected. The transmitter may be arranged for initiating a transmission based on a signal from the filter. The health-action device may be configured for responding to an indicator of a health related condition or occurrence of a user and may include one or more of a receiver, a processor, and a responder. The health-action device may stimulate the user or may cancel the snoring sound.

Claims

1. A health-sensing device for placement on a user, the health-sensing device comprising:

a sensor configured to sense motion corresponding to a breathing pattern of the user and generate a sensor signal in response to the sensed motion;

a filter configured to receive the sensor signal, determine if an apnea event has been detected, and generate a filter signal in response to detecting the apnea event; and

a transmitter configured to receive the filter signal and generate a transmission responsive to the filter signal.

2. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the sensor is an accelerometer configured to sense motion of the user'"'"'s chest.

3. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the sensor signal is provided as a continuous signal or a plurality of discrete signals generated at a selected time interval.

4. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the filter is configured to determine, responsive to the sensed motion, whether a change in velocity indicating an onset of a sleep apnea event has occurred and send a filter signal.

5. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the filter is configured to determine a length of a gap in the breathing patter of the user.

6. The health-sensing device of claim 5, wherein the filter is further configured to compare the length of the gap to a threshold value.

7. The health-sensing device of claim 5, wherein the threshold value is programmable by the user.

8. The health-sensing device of claim 5, wherein the transmitted is configured to generate a transmission when the length of the gap exceeds 10 seconds.

9. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the filter is further configured to store historical information of the breathing pattern of the user.

10. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the filter is configured to identify inconsistencies in the breathing pattern of the user.

11. The health-sensing device of claim 1, wherein the sensor, the filter, and the transmitter are provided on a substrate adapted to be affixed to the user.

12. A method for monitoring a user for sleep apnea using a health-sensing device placed on the user, the method comprising:

sensing a motion corresponding to a breathing pattern of the user to generate a sensor signal;

analyzing the sensor signal to determine whether an apnea event has been detected; and

initiating a transmission responsive to a determination of an apnea event of the user.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the sensing a motion comprises monitoring a velocity of the user'"'"'s chest.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the analyzing comprises determining, responsive to the sensed motion, whether a change in velocity is indicative of an apnea event, the method further comprising generating a signal indicative of the onset of the apnea event.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the analyzing comprises identifying a gap or an irregularity in the breathing pattern of the user.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein a transmission is initiated if a length of the gap exceeds 10 seconds.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising comparing a length of the identified gap to a threshold value and generating a signal indicative of the onset of an apnea event when the length of the gap exceeds the threshold value.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the threshold value is programmable by the user.

19. The method of claim 12, further comprising stimulating the user in response to a transmission signal indicating an apnea event.

20. The method of claim 12, further comprising storing historical information of the breathing pattern of the user.
