Abstract

Methods of adding data identifiers and speech/voice recognition functionality are disclosed. A telnet client runs one or more scripts that add data identifiers to data fields in a telnet session. The input data is inserted in the corresponding fields based on data identifiers. Scripts run only on the telnet client without modifications to the server applications. Further disclosed are methods for providing speech recognition and voice functionality to telnet clients. Portions of input data are converted to voice and played to the user. A user also may provide input to certain fields of the telnet session by using his voice. Scripts running on the telnet client convert the user'"'"'s voice into text and is inserted to corresponding fields.

Claims

8. A method of operating a telnet client comprising:

a. receiving data from a server over a telnet session;

b. running one or more scripts on the telnet client, the one or more scripts causing the telnet client to;

I. detect one or more input fields displayable on a screen of the telnet client in the received data; and

,

II. associate one or more data identifiers with at least one detected input field.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein one or more data identifiers are associated with at least one detected input field based on information comprising at least one of:

(1) one or more rules specified by the telnet client; and

,

(2) the name of the at least one detected input field.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

a. receiving input from the user of the telnet client; and

,

b. running one or more scripts on the telnet client, the one or more scripts causing the telnet client to;

i. process the received input; and

,

ii. match the processed input with one of the detected input fields based on one or more data identifiers associated with that input field.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the processing the received input comprises at least one of:

(1) parsing the received input;

(2) inserting additional text in the received input; and

,

(3) removing a portion of the received input.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the received input is a bar code scan.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the received input is speech.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising converting speech into text.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising generating speech.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the content of the generated speech comprises at least one of:

(1) an instruction;

(2) a prompt;

(3) help information;

(4) a portion of text displayed on the screen of the telnet client; and

,

(5) prior user input.

17. A client implemented method comprising:

a client establishing a virtual terminal protocol session with a server;

the client receiving data from the server;

the client identifying one or more input fields from the received data; and

,

the client associating one or more data identifiers with at least one detected input field.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein one or more data identifiers are associated with at least one detected input field based on information comprising at least one of:

one or more rules specified by the client; and

,

the name of the at least one detected input field.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

the client receiving input data; and

,

the client associating the input data with one of the detected input fields based on one or more data identifiers associated with that input field.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising processing the user input data, wherein the processing comprises at least one of:

parsing the input data;

adding a character of the input data; and

removing a portion of the input data.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the received input data comprises a barcode scan.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the received input data comprises a voice command.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising converting speech into text.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising generating speech.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the speech comprises at least one of:

an instruction;

a prompt, help information, a portion of text displayed on a screen of the client, and a prior user input.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein the virtual terminal protocol is telnet.

27. A client implemented method comprising:

a client running a virtual terminal protocol session with a server;

the client receiving data from the server;

the client running one or more script that causes the client to;

identify one or more input fields from the received data; and

,

associate one or more data identifiers with at least one detected input field.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the one or more script causes the client to detect displayable text data in the received data.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the displayable text comprises the one or more input fields.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the one or more script causes the client to analyze the displayable text data and add a data identifier to at least one of the one or more input fields.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein a first data identifier comprises at least one special character operable to distinguish the data identifier from other types of data and from a second data identifier.

32. The method of claim 27, further comprising the client displaying at least one detected input field on a screen of the client.

33. The method of claim 27, further comprising the client receiving input data.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the input data comprises a barcode scan.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the input data comprises one of:

a sequence of input button data; and

,

a voice command.

36. The method of claim 33, further comprising processing the input data, wherein the processing comprises one of:

removing an input data character;

adding an input data character; and

,

parsing the data.

37. The method of claim 33, further comprising adding a geographic location indicator to the input data.

38. The method of claim 27, further comprising generating speech.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the speech comprises at least one of:

an instruction;

a prompt;

help information;

a portion of text displayed on a screen of the client; and

,

information based on a prior user input.

40. The method of claim 27, wherein the virtual terminal protocol is telnet.
