Abstract

A method of providing originator information to an intended communications recipient during establishment of a communication session includes reading, at an originating communication terminal, originator information carried by a device located with the originating terminal, and including at least some of the originator information in at least one signal transmitted by the originating communication terminal during establishment of the communication session for transmission to a communication terminal associated with the intended communications recipient.

Claims

1. A method of providing originator information to an intended communications recipient during establishment of a communication session, the method comprising:

reading, at an originating communication terminal, originator information carried by a device located with the originating terminal;

including at least some of the originator information in at least one signal transmitted by the originating communication terminal during establishment of the communication session for transmission to a communication terminal associated with the intended communications recipient.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein reading originator information comprises electromagnetically reading the originator information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein electromagnetically reading originator information comprises optically reading the originator information.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the device located with the originating terminal comprises a substrate carrying a bar code.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein electromagnetically reading originator information comprises reading the originator information at radio frequencies.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the device located with the originating terminal comprises an RFID device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein reading originator information comprises reading information from a read only memory (ROM).

8. The method of claim 1, wherein reading originator information comprises reading information from a reprogrammable memory.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising reading, at the originating communication terminal, executable code stored on the device located with the originating terminal.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising executing the executable code at the originating terminal.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein executing the executable code at the originating terminal comprises executing the executable code to originate the communication session.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein reading originator information comprises reading information from at least two devices located with the originating terminal.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session comprises a voice call.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session comprises a text chat.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session comprises an instant messaging session.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session comprises a video conferencing session.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the originating terminal comprises a telephone.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the originating terminal comprises a mobile telephone.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the originating terminal comprises a computer.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the originating terminal comprises a personal digital assistant (PDA).

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises product information.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises information collected during earlier communications.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises a customer rating value.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises originator identity information selected from name, nickname, occupation, title, organization and contact information.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises an image associated with the originator.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises an image of the originator.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information comprises audio information.

28. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

reading, at an originating communication terminal, source information carried by the device located with the originating terminal, the source information being associated with a source of the information carried by the device located with the originating terminal;

including at least some of the source information in at least one signal transmitted by the originating communication terminal during establishment of the communication session for transmission to a communication terminal associated with the intended communications recipient.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein the information carried by the device located with the originating terminal is encrypted.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the information included in the at least one signal transmitted by the originating communication terminal is encrypted.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein the originator information is included in at least one signal transmitted by the originating terminal in attempt initiation of the communication session.
