Abstract

A rooter includes a rotatable element, an actuator for causing the rotatable element to rotate, and a coupling feature for rotatably coupling an elongated medical instrument to the rotatable element. The rotatable element may be at least partially contained within the interior of a housing or another element that remains substantially stationary as the actuator causes the rotatable element to rotate. The rooter may be used with a variety of elongated medical instruments, such as needles, drill bits, trocars, wires, catheters, tubes, and other elongated instruments that are used to enable or effect medical procedures within the body of a subject. The rooter may be used for a variety of purposes, including, without limitation, the introduction of an elongated medical instrument into the body of a subject or its removal from the subject'"'"'s body; removing, breaking up, or eliminating obstructions (e.g., blood clots, plaques, etc.) from the body of a subject; and obtaining samples from a subject'"'"'s body.

Claims

1. A rooter for manually spinning an elongated medical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a rotatable element including a rotation facilitator disposed at least partially within an interior of the housing,

a coupling feature associated with the rotatable element for rotatably engaging an elongated medical instrument;

an actuator including;

an internal element that interacts with the rotation facilitator of the rotatable element for causing the rotatable element to rotate; and

an external element extending from the housing and configured to be engaged by at least one finger for manual operation;

a handle extending from the housing, the handle configured to be held by a portion of a hand; and

an intermediate element extending transversely from the handle and hingedly secured to the external element of the actuator.

2. The rooter of claim 1, wherein the exterior element of the actuator is hingedly secured to the interior element of the actuator.

3. The rooter of claim 2, wherein the exterior element of the actuator includes a pair of spaced apart arms that engage opposite sides of the interior element of the actuator.

4. The rooter of claim 1, wherein the rotation facilitator of the rotatable element comprises a helical element and the actuator is configured to be translated longitudinally along the rotatable element to cause the rotatable element to rotate.

5. The rooter of claim 4, wherein the rotation facilitator comprises a helical ridge protruding from a surface of the rotatable element.

6. The rooter of claim 4, comprising a conduit extending through a length of the rotatable element and communicating with a distal end and a proximal end of the rooter.

7. The rooter of claim 6, wherein the conduit is configured to receive a portion of an elongated medical instrument.

8. The rooter of claim 4, wherein the coupling feature is located adjacent to a distal portion of the rotatable element.

9. The rooter of claim 8, comprising at least one retention element for at least partially retaining the rotatable element longitudinally relative to the housing.

10. The rooter of claim 9, wherein the at least one retention element comprises the coupling feature.

11. A rooter for manually spinning an elongated medical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a rotatable element including a rotation facilitator disposed at least partially within an interior of the housing,

a coupling feature associated with the rotatable element for rotatably engaging an elongated medical instrument; and

an actuator including;

an internal element that interacts with the rotation facilitator of the rotatable element for causing the rotatable element to rotate; and

a pair of external elements extending from opposite sides of the housing and configured to be engaged fingers for manual operation.

12. The rooter of claim 11, further comprising:

a handle located at a proximal end of the housing for receiving a hand.

13. The rooter of claim 12, wherein the handle extends transverse to a length of the housing.

14. A macerator wire comprising a distal end with a loop at the distal end.

15. The macerator wire of claim 14, wherein the loop comprises a complete loop.

16. The macerator wire of claim 15, wherein a distal end of the wire is secured to another location of the wire.

17. The macerator wire of claim 14, wherein the loop comprises a substantially complete loop.

18. The macerator wire of claim 14, wherein the loop includes a distal edge configured for introduction into the body of a subject.

19. The macerator wire of claim 18, wherein the distal edge of the loop is rounded.

20. The macerator wire of claim 19, wherein the loop has one of a circular shape, a substantially circular shape, an elliptical shape and an oval shape.
