Abstract

A method of performing a fund transfer at an ATM includes receiving an active authentication transaction key at an ATM from a mobile financial transaction instrument via a wireless communication protocol, generating a PIN at the ATM, and storing the PIN in a machine readable storage medium. An authorization request message is transmitted to a financial institution identified by the active authentication transaction key. The authorization request message includes the PIN and at least a portion of the active authentication transaction key. The PIN is received from a user of the mobile financial transaction instrument, and the funds are dispensed in response to receiving the PIN.

Claims

1. A method of performing a fund transfer at an ATM, comprising:

receiving an active authentication transaction key at an ATM from a mobile financial transaction instrument via a wireless communication protocol;

generating a PIN at the ATM;

storing the PIN in a machine readable storage medium;

transmitting an authorization request message to a financial institution identified by the active authentication transaction key, the authorization request message including the PIN and at least a portion of the active authentication transaction key;

receiving the PIN from a user of the mobile financial transaction instrument; and

dispensing the funds in response to receiving the PIN.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the active authentication transaction key includes a substantially random alpha-numeric string.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the financial institution is identified by a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a second portion of the active authentication transaction key to an active authentication registry; and

receiving an identity of the financial institution from the active authentication registry based on the second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the financial institution based on a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the active authentication transaction key does not include an include a static identifier for an account of a transferor from which the funds are to be transferred.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the PIN received from the user of the mobile financial transaction instrument to the PIN stored in the machine readable storage medium to confirm that the PINs match.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the PIN is received from the user of the mobile financial transaction instrument via a wireless transmission from the mobile financial transaction instrument.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the PIN is received from the user via physical contact between the user and the ATM.

10. A system, comprising:

a module configured to wirelessly receive an active authorization transaction key from a mobile financial transaction instrument;

a non-transient machine-readable storage medium configured to store a PIN generated by the system; and

a processor coupled to the module and to the non-transient machine-readable storage medium, the processor configured to;

cause an authorization message to be transmitted to a financial institution identified by the active authentication transaction key, the authorization message including the PIN and at least a portion of the active authentication transaction key, and

cause funds to be dispensed in response to receiving the PIN from a user of the mobile financial transaction instrument.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein module is configured to receive the PIN from the user.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the active authentication transaction key includes a substantially random alpha-numeric string.

13. The system claim 10, wherein the financial institution is identified by a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the processor is configured to

cause a second portion of the active authentication transaction key to be transmitted to an active authentication registry;

and

receive an identity of the financial institution from the active authentication registry based on the second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the processor is configured to identify the financial institution based on a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the active authentication transaction key does not include an include a static identifier for an account of a transferor from which the funds are to be transferred.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein the processor is configured to compare the PIN received from the user of the mobile financial transaction instrument to the PIN stored in the non-transient machine-readable storage medium to confirm that the PINs match.

18. A non-transient machine-readable storage medium encoded with program code, wherein when the program code is executed by a processor, the processor performs a method comprising the steps of:

causing a PIN to be generated in response to wirelessly receiving an active authentication transaction key from a mobile financial transaction instrument;

causing an authorization message to be transmitted to a financial institution identified by the active authentication transaction key, the authorization message including the PIN and at least a portion of the active authentication transaction key, and

causing funds to be dispensed in response to receiving the PIN from a user of the mobile financial transaction instrument.

19. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the active authentication transaction key includes a substantially random alpha-numeric string.

20. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the financial institution is identified by a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

21. The non-transient machine readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the method includes:

causing a second portion of the active authentication transaction key to be transmitted to an active authentication registry; and

receiving an identity of the financial institution from the active authentication registry based on the second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

22. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the method includes identifying the financial institution based on a second portion of the active authentication transaction key.

23. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the active authentication transaction key does not include an include a static identifier for an account of a transferor from which the funds are to be transferred.

24. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the method includes comparing the PIN received from the user of the mobile financial transaction instrument to the PIN stored in the machine-readable storage medium to confirm that the PINS match.

25. The non-transient machine-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the method includes wirelessly receiving the PIN from the user.
