Abstract

A method and system for both autonomous and manual control of an infusion pump for delivering medication to a patient is provided.

Claims

1. An infusion pump system, comprising an infusion pump body, a control system, and an RFID reader, wherein the RFID reader is in communication with the control system.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is contained within the infusion pump body, or forms part of the infusion pump body.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is configured to enter food information to the control system.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the RFID reader providing device-assisted data entry to enter a foodstuff identification to the control system of the infusion pump system.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the infusion pump system comprises:

a medicine reservoir insertable into an interior space of the infusion pump body through an opening in the infusion pump body;

a drive system positioned in the pump body; and

a user-accessible button positioned along the infusion pump body.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the RFID reader is contained within the infusion pump body, or forms part of the infusion pump body.

7. The system of claim 3, wherein the foodstuff identification comprises an RFID tag.

8. The system of claim 3, wherein the control system is configured to use the entered foodstuff identification to retrieve foodstuff composition information.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein said foodstuff composition information is retrieved from an onboard data repository of said infusion pump system.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the control system is configured to determine a recommended bolus amount based at least partially on the foodstuff composition information.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the foodstuff composition information retrieved by the infusion pump system includes carbohydrate, fat, and protein composition information of a foodstuff.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the control system is configured to determine said recommended bolus amount based at least partially on user metabolism information.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the control system is configured to determine said recommended bolus amount based at least partially on a user'"'"'s food on board and insulin on board information.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the control system is configured to determine said recommended bolus amount based the following equation:

Food Now=the amount and type of foodstuffs ingested expressed in terms of grams, carbohydrates, proteins or fat.
