1. A method of controlling an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter in a process variable transmitter that converts an analog input signal indicative of an industrial process variable to a digital output signal, the method comprising:

  • receiving the analog input signal indicative of the industrial process variable;

    measuring a signal level of the analog input signal;

    intermittently matching a resolution setting for the A/D converter to the measured signal level for the analog input, based on the measured signal level for the analog input signal, such that the A/D converter converts the analog input signal to the digital output signal with a highest resolution obtainable from the A/D converter, given the measured signal level of the analog input signal;

    converting the analog input signal to the digital output signal using the matched resolution setting; and

    sending information related to the industrial process variable over a transmission connection.
