Abstract

Techniques are provided for enabling communications between a business process and an external entity, by a) receiving notification data from a business process of a computer-based business process management system, b) applying a set of rules to any of the notification data to select an external entity to whom a communication will be sent, select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the external entity, and generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the selected communications channel, and c) sending the communication to the external entity via the selected communications channel.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for enabling communications between a business process and an external entity, comprising:

receiving notification data from a business process of a computer-based business process management system;

applying a set of rules to any of the notification data to

select an external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the selected communications channel; and

sending the communication to the external entity via the selected communications channel.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the applying further comprises:

applying any of the rules to a combination of static attributes and dynamic attributes associated with the external entity to select the external entity,

wherein the static attributes are attributes that require manual updating, and

wherein the dynamic attributes are attributes that are automatically updated substantially in real-time and without direct human intervention.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the applying further comprises:

generating the communication in a human-consumable format.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the applying further comprises:

providing the external entity with additional data that is relevant to the notification data.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving reply data from the external entity; and

providing any of the reply data to the business process in a format that is consumable by the business process.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the applying further comprises:

for each of a plurality of external entities, selecting the external entity and the communications channel; and

initiating a collaborative communications session between the plurality of external entities.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a reply from the external entity indicating that the external entity is unavailable;

applying any rules in the rules database to any of the notification data to

select a second external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the second external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the secondly selected communications channel; and

sending the communication to the second external entity via the secondly selected communications channel.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

performing the applying and the sending for a different external entity in the absence of a reply received from the external entity within a predefined amount of time after the communication is sent to the external entity.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

maintaining any of the notification data and the communication in a history data file on a computer-readable data storage device.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

maintaining any of the notification data, the communication, and reply data in a history data file on a computer-readable data storage device.

11. A system for enabling communications between a business process and an external entity, the system comprising:

a processor;

a mediator configured to receive notification data from a business process of a computer-based business process management system; and

a rules database stored on a computer-readable data storage device;

where the mediator is configured to;

apply any rules in the rules database to any of the notification data to

select an external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the selected communications channel; and

send the communication to the external entity via the selected communications channel.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the mediator is further configured to:

apply any of the rules to a combination of static attributes and dynamic attributes associated with the external entity to select the external entity,

wherein the static attributes are attributes that require manual updating, and

wherein the dynamic attributes are attributes that are automatically updated substantially in real-time and without direct human intervention.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the mediator is configured to:

receive reply data from the external entity, and

provide any of the reply data to the business process in a format that is consumable by the business process.

14. The system of claim 11 where the mediator is configured to:

for each of a plurality of external entities, select the external entity and the communications channel; and

initiate a collaborative communications session between the external entities.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the mediator is configured to:

receive a reply from the external entity indicating that the external entity is unavailable;

apply any rules in the rules database to any of the notification data to

select a second external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the second external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the secondly selected communications channel; and

send the communication to the second external entity via the secondly selected communications channel.

16. A computer program product for enabling communications between a business process and an external entity, the computer program product comprising:

a computer-readable storage medium; and

computer-readable program code embodied in said computer-readable storage medium, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to;

receive notification data from a business process of a computer-based business process management system,

apply a set of rules to any of the notification data to

select an external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the selected communications channel; and

send the communication to the external entity via the selected communications channel.

17. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

apply any of the rules to a combination of static attributes and dynamic attributes associated with the external entity to select the external entity,

wherein the static attributes are attributes that require manual updating, and

wherein the dynamic attributes are attributes that are automatically updated substantially in real-time and without direct human intervention.

18. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

generate the communication in a human-consumable format.

19. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

provide the external entity with additional data that is relevant to the notification data.

20. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

receive reply data from the external entity, and

provide any of the reply data to the business process in a format that is consumable by the business process.

21. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

for each of a plurality of external entities, select the external entity and the communications channel; and

initiate a collaborative communications session between the external entities.

22. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

receive a reply from the external entity indicating that the external entity is unavailable;

apply any rules in the rules database to any of the notification data to

select a second external entity to whom a communication will be sent,

select a communications channel from among a plurality of communications channels associated with the second external entity, and

generate the communication from any of the notification data in a manner that conforms to the secondly selected communications channel; and

send the communication to the second external entity via the secondly selected communications channel.

23. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

perform the applying and the sending for a different external entity in the absence of a reply received from the external entity within a predefined amount of time after the communication is sent to the external entity.

24. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

maintain any of the notification data and the communication in a history data file on a computer-readable data storage device.

25. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein said computer-readable program code is configured to:

maintain any of the notification data, the communication, and reply data in a history data file on a computer-readable data storage device.
