Abstract

According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for creating and/or altering a video bookmark is described. The method comprises an operation of processing a request from a downloaded scripted object to create a video bookmark. The video bookmark may be information that is used for performing an action involving additional information related to the video content being played at a time of the request. Thereafter, the video bookmark is created based on the request.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

processing a request from a downloaded scripted object to create a video bookmark, the video bookmark being information that is used for performing an action involving additional information related to the video content being played at a time of the request; and

creating the video bookmark based on the request.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the action includes a use of video and/or audio information captured at the time of the request to create a user experience when the video bookmark is reviewed by a user at a later time.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the action includes delivery of video and/or audio information captured at the time of the request to an Internet-based server for the purposes of obtaining further information of interest for the user.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the action includes offering user access to a plurality of video bookmarks, including the video bookmark, for a purpose of providing further information related to the video content being played at a time of the request.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the information for the video bookmark includes metadata representing a product or service being displayed during playing of the video content.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the metadata includes a uniform resource locator (URL) for accessing additional video directed to the product or service being displayed.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the metadata includes a pointer to one or more files stored externally from logic generating the request to create the video bookmark.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the additional information includes an additional video clip directed to the product or service being displayed during playing of the video content.

The method of claim 1, wherein the processing of the request is performed by a processor, the processing includes receiving an Application Programming Interface (API) function call into an Application Programming Interface, the API function call being translated into signaling to create the video bookmark, the signaling includes addressing information for subsequent use in retrieving the additional information from an external source.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the signaling further includes an identifier for use in avoiding repetitive storage of video bookmarks.

11. An electronic device comprising:

a processing logic; and

a memory coupled to the processing logic, the memory including a triggered declarative object being executed by the processing logic during playing of video content, the triggered declarative object

detecting a bookmark event during playing of the video content, the bookmark event being an event that causes creation of metadata, the metadata being used to present additional information related to the video content being played at a time of the bookmark event.

12. The electronic device of claim 11 being a digital television including a receiver including the processing logic and the memory.

13. The electronic device of claim 12, wherein the receiver of the digital television further comprises a tuner, a demultiplexer coupled to the tuner and the processing logic, and a decoder coupled to the demultiplexer and a display unit.

14. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the metadata is part of a video bookmark that represents a product or service being displayed during playing of the video content.

15. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the metadata is part of a video bookmark that includes a uniform resource locator (URL) for accessing additional video directed to the product or service being displayed.

16. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the metadata is part of a video bookmark that includes a pointer to one or more files stored externally from the electronic device.

17. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the triggered declarative object executed by the processing logic further generates an Application Programming Interface (API) function call that is subsequently translated into signaling to create the video bookmark, the signaling includes an identifier for subsequent use in identifying the video bookmark and addressing information for subsequent use in retrieving the additional information from an external source.

18. A non-transitory storage medium to store an executable object that, when executed by a processor, causes an electronic device, implemented with both the non-transitory storage medium and the processor, to perform operations comprising:

processing a request from a downloaded scripted object to create a video bookmark, the video bookmark being information that is used for performing an action involving additional information related to the video content being played at a time of the request; and

creating the video bookmark based on the request.

19. The non-transitory storage medium of claim 18, wherein the information within the video bookmark includes metadata representing a product or service being displayed during playing of the video content.

20. The non-transitory storage medium of claim 19, wherein the metadata includes one of (i) a uniform resource locator (URL) for accessing additional video directed to the product or service being displayed and (ii) a pointer to one or more files stored externally from the electronic device.
