IN-VEHICLE EMERGENCY CALL SERVICE REGISTRATION AND CALL SETUP USING FOLLOW-ON REQUEST
First Claim
1. A method of establishing an emergency call, comprising:
- triggering an emergency in a vehicle comprising an in-vehicle system (IVS) for making an emergency call via a mobile network;
generating a registration message at the IVS; and
transmitting the registration message, and a follow-on request, from the IVS to the mobile network, via a connection between the IVS and the mobile network, for registering the IVS on the mobile network.

Abstract
A follow-on request is used in the registration request of an eCall-only mode in-vehicle system (IVS) to keep the connection alive between the registration and the emergency call setup in order to speed up the overall signaling process before sending eCall data for the eCall-only mode IVS. In this manner, two separate connections are not needed in order to perform the registration of the IVS on the mobile network and then the emergency call setup. Only one connection is used and maintained throughout registration and call setup processes. This speeds up the eCall emergency registration and call setup. In an implementation, the registration request with the follow-on request is provided only when the eCall-only IVS is activated for use in an emergency call (i.e., in an initial registration of the eCall-only IVS).
