Abstract

A system and method for peer-to-peer communications in cellular communications systems are provided. A method for communications device operations includes receiving a peer list at a communications device, where the peer list includes a list of reachable communications devices and device-to-device (D2D) capability information of the reachable communications devices, selecting a peer from the peer list, sending a content request comprising an indication of a content to a communications controller serving the communications device, and receiving the content from the peer over a channel established by the communications controller.

Claims

1. A method for communications device operations, the method comprising:

receiving a peer list at a communications device, wherein the peer list comprises a list of reachable communications devices and device-to-device (D2D) capability information for the reachable communications devices;

selecting a peer from the peer list;

sending a content request comprising an indication of a content to a communications controller serving the communications device; and

receiving the content from the peer over a channel established by the communications controller.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising registering with a tracker.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein D2D capability information comprises D2D capable information, non-D2D capable information, D2D reachable information, non-D2D reachable information, or combinations thereof.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending a peer list request comprising an indication of the content.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the peer list request is transmitted to a tracker.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the peer list request is transmitted to the communications controller.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the peer list is received from a tracker and augmented with the D2D capability information of the reachable communications devices provided by the communications controller.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the peer list comprises a first peer list and a second peer list, wherein the first peer list is received from a tracker, and wherein the second peer list comprises the D2D capability information of the reachable communications devices provided by the communications controller.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the peer list comprises a first peer list and a second peer list, wherein the first peer list is received from a tracker, and wherein receiving a peer list further comprises sending a request to the communications controller for the second peer list.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting a peer comprises selecting at least one peer from the peer list based on selection criteria.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the selection criteria comprises D2D reach ability, available data-rate, a number of supported connection, a number of current connections, distance from the communications device, communications latency, historical performance data, or combinations thereof.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein selecting a peer comprises applying greater weight to communications devices that are D2D reachable.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting a peer comprises selecting a D2D reachable communications device, and wherein receiving the content comprises receiving the content directly from the D2D reachable communications device.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

monitoring the content; and

updating peer information.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein monitoring the content comprises determining if the content was received successfully.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein determining if the content was received unsuccessfully comprises determining if the content was defective, a first timer expired before receiving any content, a second timer expired while receiving the content, a loss of signal occurred while receiving the content, a failure occurred while receiving the content, or combinations thereof.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein updating peer information occurs if the content was received unsuccessfully.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein updating peer information comprises:

updating information regarding the peer; and

sending the updated information regarding the peer to the communications controller.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein updating peer information further comprises:

selecting a replacement peer from the peer list; and

repeating the sending and the receiving with the replacement peer.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein updating peer information further comprises:

selecting a replacement peer from a new peer list; and

repeating the sending and the receiving with the replacement peer.

21. A communications device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a peer list comprising a list of reachable communications devices and D2D capability of the reachable communications devices;

a peer select unit coupled to the receiver, the peer select unit configured to select a peer from the peer list;

a content request unit coupled to the peer select unit and to the receiver, the content request unit configured to generate a content request comprising an indication of a content; and

a transmitter coupled to the peer select unit and to the content request unit, the transmitter configured to send the content request to a communications controller serving the communications device,

wherein the receiver is further configured to receive the content from the peer over a channel established by the communications controller.

22. The communications device of claim 21, further comprising a peer list unit configured to generate a request for a peer list, the request comprising an indication of the content, and wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit the request.

23. The communications device of claim 21, further comprising:

a monitor content unit coupled to the receiver, the monitor content unit configured to determine if the content was received successfully; and

a peer update unit coupled to the transmitter, the peer update unit configured to update information regarding the peer.

24. The communications device of claim 21, further comprising a content serving unit coupled to the transmitter, the content serve unit configured to schedule requested content to a peer based on a content request from the peer and to retrieve the requested content.

25. A method for communications controller operations, the method comprising:

maintaining a list of communications devices served by a communications controller, wherein the list of communications devices comprises device-to-device (D2D) capabilities of the communications devices;

receiving a request for a peer list from a communications device, wherein the request comprises an indication of a content;

providing the peer list to the communications device, wherein the peer list is a subset of the list of communications devices;

receiving a content request from the communications device, the content request comprising the indication of the content and a peer;

establishing a channel between the communications device and the peer; and

coordinating communications between the communications device and the peer.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the peer list is selected from the list of communications devices based on a proximity of the communications device to the communications controller or a proximity of the communications device to the communications devices in the list of communications devices.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the peer list is selected from the list of communications devices based on a mobility of the communications device.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein maintaining a list of communications devices comprises generating a list of communications devices served by the communications controller.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the list of communications devices comprises information about the communications devices, D2D capabilities of the communications devices, content of the communications devices, performance information regarding the communications devices, profiles of the communications devices, restrictions of the communications devices, or combinations thereof.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein providing the peer list comprises:

receiving the peer list from a tracker;

augmenting the peer list with information about communications devices in both the peer list and the list of communications devices; and

transmitting the augmented peer list to the communications device.

31. The method of claim 25, wherein providing the peer list comprises:

receiving the peer list from a tracker;

generating a supplemental peer list with information about communications devices in both the peer list and the list of communications devices; and

transmitting the peer list and the supplemental peer list to the communications device.

32. The method of claim 25, wherein providing the peer list comprises:

receiving the peer list from a tracker;

generating a supplemental peer list with information about communications devices in both the peer list and the list of communications devices;

transmitting the peer list to the communications device; and

transmitting the supplemental peer list to the communications device in response to receiving a request from the communications device for the supplemental peer list.

33. The method of claim 25, wherein the peer is a D2D reachable communications device, and wherein establishing a channel comprises allocating radio resources for the channel for use by the communications device and the peer without intervention by the communications controller.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein coordinating communications comprises transmitting an indicator of the channel to the communications device and to the peer.

35. The method of claim 25, wherein the peer is a non-D2D reachable communications device, and wherein establishing a channel comprises allocating radio resources for the channel for use by the communications device and the peer with intervention by the communications controller.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein coordinating communications comprises transmitting indicators of transmission grants to the communications device and to the peer.

37. A communications controller comprising:

a peer list unit configured to maintain a list of communications devices coupled to the communications controller, wherein the list of communications devices comprises device-to-device (D2D) capabilities of the communications devices;

a receiver configured to receive a request for a peer list from a communications device, wherein the request comprises an indication of a content, and to receive a content request from the communications device, the content request comprising an indication of the content and a peer;

a transmitter coupled to the receiver and to the peer list unit, the transmitter configured to transmit the peer list to the communications device, wherein the peer list is generated by the peer list unit based on the indication of the content, and wherein the peer list is a subset of the list of communications devices; and

a scheduler coupled to the receiver and to the transmitter, the scheduler configured to establish a channel between the communications device and the peer, and to coordinate communications between the communications device and the peer.

38. The communications controller of claim 37, wherein the peer list unit generates the list of communications devices from communications devices served by the communications controller.

39. The communications controller of claim 37, wherein the peer is a D2D reachable communications device, and wherein the scheduler establishes a channel by allocating radio resources for the channel for use by the communications device and the peer without intervention by the communications controller.

40. The communications controller of claim 39, wherein the scheduler coordinates communications by generating an indicator of the channel to be transmitted to the communications device and to the peer.

41. The communications controller of claim 37, wherein the peer is a non-D2D reachable communications device, and wherein the scheduler establishes a channel by allocating radio resources for the channel for use by the communications device and the peer with intervention by the communications controller.

42. The communications controller of claim 41, wherein the scheduler coordinates communications by generating indicators of transmission grants to the communications device and to the peer to be transmitted to the communications device and to the peer.

43. A method for communications device operations, the method comprising:

receiving a request for a content from a peer;

determining if the content has pending requests and if the content is being served;

sending the content to the peer over a channel if the content has no pending requests and if the content is not being served, wherein the channel is a device-to-device channel;

sending the content to the peer over a point-to-multipoint channel if the content has pending requests, wherein the point-to-multipoint channel is a device-to-device channel; and

sending the content to the peer over an existing point-to-multipoint channel if the content is being served, wherein the existing point-to-multipoint channel is a device-to-device channel.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the point-to-multipoint channel is a newly established channel.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the existing point-to-multipoint channel is a point-to-multipoint channel previously established to send a different content.
