Abstract

An architecture (system) and method is provided for transcoding codec information to be sent in a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling stream for rendering rich digital media content. The method is implemented on a computer infrastructure and includes: determining a codec associated with content to be sent to one or more requesting devices; determining that at least one of the one or more requesting devices do not have the codec associated with the content to be sent to the one or more requesting devices; providing codec information to the at least one of the one or more requesting devices; and sending the content to the one or more requesting devices.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a SIP application service configured to;

register with a content source;

receive registration information from one or more subscribers;

process content from the content source;

determine or receive codec information for the content source related to the content;

determine that the one or more subscribers require the codec on a device for playing the content; and

one of send the codec to the device for playing the content and send a reference to the codec to the device so that the codec can be downloaded offline from the SIP application from a codec cache.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a codec cache configured to receive a request for the codec from the one or more subscribers and send the codec to the one or more subscribers.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising a central repository which stores profiles of the device of the one or more one or more subscribers.

The system of claim 1, wherein the SIP application service is further configured to send the codec to the device for playing the content or send the reference to the codec to the device immediately after determining that the one or more subscribers require the codec on the device for playing the content, and bypassing a request of the one or more subscribers for the codec.

The system of claim 4, wherein the receiving registration information from the one or more subscribers comprises receiving an indication from the one or more subscribers that the one or more subscribers request to be provided at least one of the codec and the reference to the codec, and the content when the content is available.

6. A computer system comprising:

a CPU, a computer readable memory and a computer readable storage media;

first program instructions to register with a content source;

second program instructions to receive registration information from one or more subscribers;

third program instructions to process content from the content source;

fourth program instructions to determine or receive codec information for the content source related to the content;

fifth program instructions to determine that the one or more subscribers require the codec on a device for playing the content; and

sixth program instructions to one of send the codec to the device for playing the content and send a reference to the codec to the device so that the codec can be downloaded offline from the SIP application from a codec cache,

wherein the first-sixth program instructions are stored on the computer readable storage media for execution by the CPU via the computer readable memory.

7. The computer system of claim 6, further comprising a codec cache configured to receive a request for the codec from the one or more subscribers and send the codec to the one or more subscribers.

8. The computer system of claim 6, further comprising a central repository which stores profiles of the device of the one or more one or more subscribers.

The computer system of claim 6, further comprising seventh program instructions to send the codec to the device for playing the content or send the reference to the codec to the device immediately after determining that the one or more subscribers require the codec on the device for playing the content, and bypassing a request of the one or more subscribers for the codec.

The computer system of claim 9, wherein the receiving registration information from the one or more subscribers comprises receiving an indication from the one or more subscribers that the one or more subscribers request to be provided at least one of the codec and the reference to the codec, and the content when the content is available.
