Abstract

Described herein are compact resonator structures for wireless energy transfer that may be used in vehicle applications. The compact resonator structures comprise multiple parallel conductors to reduce the height of the structure. In some embodiments the compact resonator structures use angled routing of the conductor to reduce the effects of a minimum bend radius on the thickness of the structure.

Claims

1. A resonator coil structure for wireless energy transfer comprising:

a block of magnetic material;

a first electrical conductor wrapped around the block of magnetic material forming loops around the block of magnetic material; and

a second electrical conductor wrapped around the block of magnetic material forming loops around the block of magnetic material,

wherein the first and second electrical conductor are parallel and physically separate from each other.

2. The resonator coil structure of claim 1, wherein the first and second electrical conductors are electrically isolated from one another.

3. The resonator coil structure of claim 1, wherein the first and second electrical conductors are electrically parallel to one another.

4. The resonator coil structure of claim 3, wherein the first and second electrical conductors are electrically connected to one another at their ends.

5. The resonator coil structure of claim 1, wherein the first and second electrical conductors are electrically insulated from one another.

6. The resonator coil structure from claim 1, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same electrical properties.

7. The resonator coil structure from claim 6, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same length.

8. The resonator coil structure from claim 6, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same wire gauge.

9. The resonator coil structure from claim 1, where the first and second electrical conductors each comprise Litz wire.

10. The resonator coil structure from claim 1, further comprising at least one additional electrical conductor wrapped in parallel with the first and second electrical conductors and having substantially the same electrical properties as at least one of the first and second electrical conductors.

11. The resonator coil structure from claim 1, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same impedance.

12. The resonator coil structure from claim 8, wherein the first and second electrical conductors and at least one more additional electrical conductor have substantially the same electrical properties, wherein the first and second and at least one more electrical conductors are electrically parallel to one another, and wherein the first and second and at least one more conductors are electrically connected at the ends of the conductors and electrically insulated from one another along their length.

13. The resonator coil structure from claim 12, further comprising at least one electrically controllable switch.

14. A resonator coil structure for wireless energy transfer comprising:

a substantially rectangular block of magnetic material, the block of magnetic material having an axis and a height dimension, the height dimension substantially orthogonal to the axis; and

a first electrical conductor, the electrical conductor having a bend radius, the bend radius being larger than the height dimension,

wherein the first electrical conductor is wrapped around the block of magnetic material forming loops around the axis of the block of magnetic material, and

wherein the first electrical conductor is wrapped at an angle relative to the height dimension of the magnetic block.

15. The resonator coil structure of claim 14, further comprising a second electrical conductor, the second electrical conductor wrapped around the block of magnetic material and positioned in parallel with the first electrical conductor.

16. The resonator coil structure of claim 14, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same electrical properties.

17. The resonator coil structure of claim 16, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same length.

18. The resonator coil structure from claim 16, wherein the first and second electrical conductors have substantially the same wire gauge.
