Abstract

A system and computer-implemented method for inverting data from an area of interest to determine physical properties of the area of interest is disclosed. The method includes transforming the data into a Fourier frequency domain to obtain frequency domain data wherein the frequency domain data includes an amplitude portion and a phase portion, performing phase unwrapping of the phase portion of the frequency domain data to generate an unwrapped phase portion of unwrapped data, extrapolating the unwrapped phase portion to create extrapolated unwrapped data, and inverting the extrapolated unwrapped data to determine the physical properties of the area of interest. The data inverted may be, for example, seismic data or synthetic aperture radar data. The system includes a data source, an user interface, and a processor configured to execute computer modules designed to implement the method.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for inverting data from an area of interest to determine physical properties of the area of interest comprising:

a. transforming the data into a Fourier frequency domain to obtain frequency domain data wherein the frequency domain data includes an amplitude portion and a phase portion;

b. performing phase unwrapping of the phase portion of the frequency domain data to generate an unwrapped phase portion of unwrapped data;

c. extrapolating the unwrapped phase portion to create extrapolated unwrapped data; and

d. inverting the extrapolated unwrapped data to determine the physical properties of the area of interest, wherein the transforming, performing phase unwrapping, extrapolating, and inverting steps are performed by a computer processor.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the unwrapped phase portion is extrapolated to create phase values at frequencies lower than conventionally usable frequencies in the data.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the conventionally usable frequencies are greater than 2 Hz.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the extrapolating uses a linear relationship in the Fourier frequency domain.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the inverting includes full-waveform inversion.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the data includes seismic data.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the data includes synthetic aperture radar data.

8. A system for inverting data from an area of interest to determine physical properties of the area of interest comprising:

a. a data source containing computer-readable data;

b. a processor configured to execute computer-readable code from computer modules, the computer modules comprising;

i. a domain transformation module a domain transformation module for transforming data into a Fourier frequency domain;

ii. a phase preparation module for phase unwrapping;

iii. a phase extrapolation module; and

iv. an inversion module; and

b. an user interface.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the phase extrapolation module uses a linear relationship in the Fourier frequency domain.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the inversion module performs full-waveform inversion.

11. The system of claim 8 wherein the data source contains seismic data.

12. The system of claim 8 wherein the data source contains synthetic aperture radar data.

13. An article of manufacture comprising a computer readable medium having a computer readable code embodied therein, the computer readable program code adapted to implement a method for inverting data from an area of interest to determine physical properties of the area of interest, the method comprising:

a. transforming the data into a Fourier frequency domain to obtain frequency domain data wherein the frequency domain data includes an amplitude portion and a phase portion;

b. performing phase unwrapping of the phase portion of the frequency domain data to generate an unwrapped phase portion;

c. extrapolating the unwrapped phase portion; and

d. inverting the unwrapped phase portion to determine the physical properties of the area of interest.
