Abstract

A system and method for automatically analyzing and characterizing Internet search results and annotating a search results page according to specific characteristics of each webpage located at a URL corresponding to a search result. Such characteristics include the composition of each search results webpage as well as which search term elements are present in a webpage located at a URL corresponding to a search result out of those search term elements that were submitted to a search engine to produce the search results webpage. Further, search results are annotated to indicate which search term elements are present in a descendent webpage of a webpage located at a URL corresponding to a search result. Search results may also be optionally filtered according to specific characteristics of a webpage located at a search results URL such that certain categories of webpage are excluded from being referenced in the displayed search results.

Claims

1. A system for displaying Internet search results that are analyzed and annotated, comprising:

a personal computing device for operating an Internet browser and displaying annotated Internet search results;

at least one computing device for analyzing an Internet search results webpage and determining certain specific characteristics of webpages located at URLs provided in the Internet search results webpage; and

wherein each search result on the search results webpage is symbolically annotated to convey to the user of the personal computing device said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the personal computing device and said computing device for analyzing are the same device.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said computing device for analyzing is a server residing at a specific URL address.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein said computing device for analyzing comprises one or more computing devices located in the Cloud.

The system of claim 1 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result comprise which search term elements are present in the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result out of those search term elements that were submitted to a search engine to produce the search results webpage.

The system of claim 5 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result further comprise which search term elements are present in a descendent webpage of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result out of those search term elements that were submitted to a search engine to produce the search results webpage.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result comprise the composition of information displayed on the webpage.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises at least one of a search capability and a search and compare capability.

9. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises an offer of information.

10. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises links to other websites.

11. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises information related to goods and/or services for sale.

12. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage is reflective of the behavior of the webpage.

13. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises information related to the presence or absence of search term elements on the webpage and/or a descendant page of the webpage.

14. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage comprises that of the home page of a manufacturer of goods who also owns the domain URL of the webpage.

15. The system of claim 7 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage comprises content that is in some way related to the domain name of the webpage.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein:

a user determines that an automatically determined specific characteristic of a specific webpage located at a search result URL is not an optimum first category determination;

the user further determines that a second category determination is more appropriate for the webpage; and

thereafter, webpages located at search result URLs having similar characteristics to the specific webpage are automatically categorized according to the second category determination.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein a search result grouping containing a search result URL that references a webpage determined to be in a predetermined filter category is not shown in the search results webpage.

18. A method for displaying Internet search results including analyzing and annotating the Internet search results, comprising:

analyzing an Internet search results webpage and determining certain specific characteristics of each webpage located at a search result URL provided in the Internet search results webpage; and

symbolically annotating each search result on the search results webpage to convey to the user who performed the Internet search said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result.

The method of claim 18 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result comprise which search term elements are present in the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result out of those search term elements that were submitted to a search engine to produce the search results webpage.

The method of claim 19 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result further comprise which search term elements are present in a descendent webpage of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result out of those search term elements that were submitted to a search engine to produce the search results webpage.

21. The method of claim 18 wherein said specific characteristics of the webpage located at the URL corresponding to the search result comprise the composition of information displayed on the webpage.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises at least one of a search capability and a search and compare capability.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises an offer of information.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises links to other websites.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises information related to goods and/or services for sale.

26. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage is reflective of the behavior of the webpage.

27. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage primarily comprises information related to the presence or absence of search term elements on the webpage and/or a descendant page of the webpage.

28. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage comprises that of the home page of a manufacturer of goods who also owns the domain URL of the webpage.

29. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition of information displayed on the webpage comprises content that is in some way related to the domain name of the webpage.

30. The method of claim 18 wherein:

a user determines that an automatically determined specific characteristic of a specific webpage located at a search result URL is not an optimum first category determination;
