Abstract

An electronic locking device secures a shipping container and includes a housing, two arms, a sensing circuit, and electronics. The pair of arms extend from the housing and couple to the hasp. The arms transition between locked and unlocked configurations relative to the hasp, with one or both of the arms pivoting relative to the other. A bolt seal locks the arms in the locked configuration. The sensing circuit, which includes sensing contacts, is in a “closed” state or “open” state depending on whether the arms are in the locked or unlocked configuration. The electronics record and report the state of the sensing circuit, thereby indicating whether the arms are locked or unlocked.

91. A method for securing a shipping container, comprising:

providing an electronic locking device, comprising

a housing including an electronics compartment,

a pair of arms, extending from the housing,

a sensing circuit, and

electronics housed in the electronics compartment and coupled to the sensing circuit;

configuring the electronic locking device from a locked configuration to an unlocked configuration by pivoting at least one of the arms away from the other arm;

as a function of the at least one arm being pivoted away from the other arm, placing the sensing circuit in an “

open”

state;

recognizing, by the electronics, the “

open”

state of the sensing circuit;

generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

open”

state of the sensing circuit;

positioning the electronic locking device in proximity to a hasp on a shipping container;

coupling the arms to the hasp on the shipping container by pivoting at least one of the arms towards the other arm from the unlocked configuration into the locked configuration;

as a function of the at least one arm being pivoted toward the other arm, placing the sensing circuit in a “

closed”

state;

recognizing, by the electronics, the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit; and

generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit.

92. The method of claim 91, further comprising a step of locking the electronic locking device in the locked configuration with a bolt seal.

93. The method of claim 92, wherein the step of locking the electronic locking device in the locked configuration with a bolt seal includes inserting a bolt of the bolt seal through respective openings on the arms.

94. The method of claim 91, further comprising a step of translating the output to indicate whether the arms were in the locked configuration or the unlocked configuration.

95. The method of claim 91, wherein the step of placing the sensing circuit in an “

open”

state is effectuated by separating a sensing contact on one arm from a sensing contact on the other arm.

96. The method of claim 91, wherein the electronic locking device includes one or more batteries.

98. The method of claim 91, wherein the housing includes one or more magnets configured for coupling of the housing to a shipping container door.

99. The method of claim 91, wherein the electronics are configured for wireless communications.

100. The method of claim 99, wherein the step of generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit, comprises generating an output for communication via wireless communications.

101. The method of claim 91, wherein the step of generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit, comprises generating an output indicating a time that the sensing circuit was transitioned to a “

closed”

state.

102. A method for securing a shipping container, comprising:

transitioning an electronic locking device, the electronic locking device comprising a housing, a pair of arms extending from the housing, a sensing circuit, and one or more electronic components disposed within the housing coupled to the sensing circuit, from a locked configuration to an unlocked configuration by pivoting one of the arms away from the other arm, such pivoting effecting transition of the sensing circuit to an “

open”

state;

generating, by the one or more electronic components, output indicating the “

open”

state of the sensing circuit;

positioning the electronic locking device in proximity to a hasp on a shipping container;

transitioning the electronic locking device from the unlocked configuration to a locked configuration with the arms coupled to the hasp on the shipping container by pivoting at least one of the arms towards the other arm, such pivoting effecting transition of the sensing circuit to a “

closed”

state;

generating, by the one or more electronic components, output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit.

103. The method of claim 102, further comprising a step of locking the electronic locking device in the locked configuration with a bolt.

104. The method of claim 103, wherein the step of locking the electronic locking device in the locked configuration with a bolt includes inserting the bolt through respective openings on the arms.

105. The method of claim 102, wherein the step of pivoting one of the arms away from the other arm so as to effect transition of the sensing circuit to an “

open”

state comprises separating a sensing contact on one arm from a sensing contact on the other arm.

106. The method of claim 102, wherein the housing includes one or more magnets configured for coupling of the housing to a shipping container door.

107. The method of claim 102, wherein the step of generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit, comprises generating an output for communication via wireless communications.

108. The method of claim 102, wherein the step of generating, by the electronics, an output indicating the “

closed”

state of the sensing circuit, comprises generating an output indicating a time that the sensing circuit was transitioned to a “

closed”

state.

109. A method comprising:

determining, at one or more electronic components disposed within a housing of an electronic locking device, the electronic locking device comprising a pair of arms extending from the housing and a sensing circuit coupled to the one or more electronic components, that the sensing circuit has been transitioned from a “

closed”

state to an “

open state”

;

communicating, from the one or more electronic components of the electronic locking device to another wireless communications device, an indication of such transition together with a time associated with such transition;

wherein the electronic locking device is configured to be secured to a hasp of a shipping container by positioning the arms proximate the hasp and transitioning the electronic locking device to a locked configuration with the arms coupling the electronic locking device to the hasp;

wherein the electronic locking device is configured such that transitioning the electronic locking device from the locked configuration to an unlocked configuration effects transitioning of the sensing circuit from the “

closed”

state to the “

open”

state.

110. The method of claim 109, wherein the electronic locking device is configured such that transitioning the electronic locking device from the locked configuration to an unlocked configuration effects separation of a sensing contact on one arm from a sensing contact on the other arm.
